..if the unsubstantiated rumour I heard today is true, Barkley's improved contract is circa £60-£70k per week, less than half of that on offer to Lukaku who still has 2 years to run. If true it could be an indication of the club's resolve to keep him.

I completely understand the sentiment you're trying to get across here and wouldn't ever try and legislate or moralize someone's life. Saying all that though, I just feel he's been unbelievably blessed to not only have played for his boyhood club but to come back so strongly from his leg beak half a decade ago. If it were me in that scenario I would spend my money on creating an environment around me that would help me succeed professionally (which in this case since he's one of us, personally too) to the utmost, i.e. dietician/cook, personal trainer for the off season, etc.

Maybe that's too harsh and I'm too robotic when it comes to a work / life balance but with what he's been able to earn if he's smart about it he can retire and live however he's deems fit from 30something on. Plenty of time and young enough to run around whatever town he chooses and running around with whatever woman he chooses.

I fully understand I might be an anomaly though.

Maybe you should take a glance at evertons golden era that was on sky this morning. Gray sheedy and sharp were on and explained the importance of being able to have a couple if pints etc and live abit of a normal life now and again to be sucessful. I dont think barkley is out every night of the week. If i was betting id say something like once a month. No harm in that. Its the other muppets in society that are the problem

The Mail, admittedly not the most reliable of sources, reported it as 65k, irrc Rom's was 70k.
