Ross Barkley

I read the posts from the Man City fan above, it's very intriguing what he says about the Man City journos and that City are trying to offload players to make a big bid for Ross, it could well be true, especially given the fact there seems to be a major holdup with Ross' new deal which would make sense if Everton know City are going to come in with a massive bid for him

That could be it for Everton and me if Ross gets sold this summer, at least till Kenwright and co get out of the club. I'll be beyond devastated

I don't think this is the case tbh. I agree with the rest of your post though.

Pretty much everyone at Everton is expecting Barkley to become one of the very best players in the world. He just has everything and in a few seasons he will be a superstar. So if he was to be sold then the price tag needs to reflect that. If Pogba is being touted for £60m-£70m then Barkley should be similar. I know Pogba has performed at a higher level but it was only the season before last that he was struggling to get in to Juve's first team (IIRC).

£50m+ easily. He's going to be like Zidane on speed.
He will be very very good but he is so overrated by our fans, especially English because the media and all that get excited. (No-one has learned yet)

People say he will play for RM, no chance. Maybe someone in the prem like Chelsea or City.

I honestly believe Stones could go on to be world class and play for a team like Barca, not barkley

I don't disagree. But expecting £50+ million purely on potential and expectation is a bit mad. James went for what, £36 million last summer? He's had one season in the top flight and showed his talent, but also showed he has a lot to learn.

He probably is worth that much money, but lets be fair, if he played for Southampton we'd be making fun of the English player tax. £50 million is absolutely mad money and one would generally expect to get a more fully developed player for it.

We shouldn't sell for it unless he makes it clear he wants out though.

Cracking post and one I agree with wholeheartedly. I think Ross is your ticket into challenging the top 4 not due to his ability because lets face it, no one player can make that kind of difference otherwise Spurs would've finished in the top 4 when Bale was bagging 20+ goals a season as a winger, but because it will help keep your best players and help sign other top players.

This is a genuine question, why do you think that he hasn't signed new terms when Coleman, Baines, even Martinez have? It's probably the one thing in all of this which has got me intrigued or should I say hopeful.
My guess would be his agent was hoping he'd do very well at the World cup and he could ask for a better deal - even with a poor World cup his price wasn't going to go down at least for Everton.

And now Ross is on holiday, think it will get sorted on his return.

How long is left on his contract? I honestly don't know.

The one thing English do and they shouldn't do it is they see a decent youngster and just go bang heres a 5 year contract on 80k per week (wilshere and probably more but I don't have my thinking cap on).

I like to pretend the future doesn't exist and Ross's contract is for eternity.

In all honesty, it's probably him holding out for the most money he can get. If he'd destroyed the World Cup and signed a contract for £50k or something beforehand he'd be kicking himself (and his agent would hate him as well). Hoping it gets sorted soon. If it's not sorted by the end of August I plan to just put my head back in the sand and repeat that he's an Evertonian over and over again.

Maybe he's holding out to see who we bring in as well.

Honestly, given City's spending power. I think it would be a bad move for City to accommodate Ross in that sense. He's a brilliant player, but he's still learning and developing. City can buy finished products or at least players that are further along.

Is the need for homegrown players that great with the smaller squad size?

I think City need to do something about their situation with homegrown players. We're in a position where the established narrative is that English players don't get a chance at our club. That in and of itself is a bit of a nonsense when you consider that Barry, Milner, Lescott, and Hart have played crucial roles in all the trophies we've won since the takeover. The truth is that the players who haven't had a chance simply weren't good enough (Sinclair, Rodwell, and Adam Johnson). However until there's an English player who is in our best XI the narrative will remain we don't give English players a chance.

In terms of it being a risk in accommodating Ross I agree wholeheartedly, but I also believe that it's a risk worth taking. Ultimately if I were to hold up a midfield trio of Barkley, Toure, and Fernando or Fernandinho against what Liverpool, Chelsea, or Arsenal have, then I'd still pick ours over theirs.

Haha much respect mate. I know exactly what you're talking about. Time will bare all of these things out and honestly I'll probably be sent packing with my dreams in tatters in a few weeks when he does put pen to paper on a new deal!

Any young players close to breaking through? From the outside it's strange that you guys are letting the English/homegrown contingent leave and not making a realistic attempt to replace them.

He's going to sign a contract. Even Fellaini, who was up for a move for a good while before he left, signed a long-term deal to ensure we got a fair price for him. Ross has no such hunger for a move at this point, so he'll sign a contract with the intention of staying for some time yet.

There's absolutely no way Ross Barkley will be able to put this club in a position where we have to sell as you're suggesting and there's no way the club would let him. There'd be absolute murder.

If Ross was to move this summer, we're talking mega money, as he has 2 years left and we've never been in as strong a bargaining position as we are currently.

If he leaves next summer, we're talking mega money as he'll have signed a contract with a high release clause and most probably improved his reputation considerably.
