Nothing against Shrek, as he is total class, but at the same time, how many goals would he score for relegation fodder Sunderland?

Darren Bent on the other hand has already scored 18 league goals for Sunderland. Only 7 behind Shrek. How many might he score for one of the worlds best teams in United?

Not only that, but Bent has been amongst the top scorers in the league now for every team he's played for.

I'm not saying he's better than Rooney, but he's got to be at a standard where he would surely be at the top of every teams wish list regarding strikers.

Why then, hasn't he been called up for England? Is it because he's a Black Cat?

I suspect if you went and asked Spurs fans what they think of Bent you'd find they don't rate him too highly. Didn't Redknapp once say his Grandma was a better player than him when he was still at his club?

He gets a lot of chances at Sunderland too, Bruce said - perhaps a little tongue in cheek - he was a little disappointed he didn't score 4 or 5.

Sorry but no, woeful for Spurs. The side Defoe plays for and scores plenty for. Problem between his ears, and went 10 games without scoring up to a week or so ago.

Bent was dropped by Redknapp, but still scored plenty.

28 starts - 17 goals
13 starts - 7 goals

Charlton
34 starts - 15 goals
43 starts - 22 goals

Ipswich
50 starts - 20 goals
36 starts - 17 goals
27 starts - 18 goals

If that was Michael Owen, who truly did score but do nothing else for the team, everyone would be raving about him.

No, Messi is the best player of his genaration. He's an amazing talent. Rooney is certainly up there though.

As for Bent, as has been said, he's a finisher and little else. Lots of teams are looking for more from a striker nowadays. Which is what people where trying to put across about Yakubu. He brings alot more to the table than goals.

because he's not part of the big 4, or part of the furniture (eg Heskey - the sofa)

Rooney is on fire at the moment and easily one of the best in the world.

Messi however is just better. A joy to watch.

Despite the Rooney title, the thread is really about Bent for those who didn't read the opening post. :)

The reason I used the thread title is because commentators are getting carried away by his goals, but ignoring Bents 18 ( worth 30 United goals ).(y)

There's little doubt Bent should be in the squad assuming he doesn't have a massive dip in from now until the end of the season. The problem is, he's realistically battling for 1 spare place up front. Whilst he didn't cover himself in glory vs Brazil, neither did the rest of the team and he got minimal service. He deserves another chance.

At Sunderland, he's pretty much their go-to man - 90% of balls are looking for him so in that aspect, it's no surprise he gets so many goalscoring chances. Fair play to him for producing some excellent finishing so far this season though.

He is the most consistent, the most prolific, and has the best stats of ANY player in the world, at the moment.

So, Yes. He is the best player in the world at the moment.

And he is a Toffee.
