He was 28 when the extension was given. In theory he is still worth a couple of million pounds.
Yet, he has played one game since August. Doubt we can get rid of him in Jan not even a loan.

BUT..IF he had any defensive common sense, I'm pretty sure we'd have been in at least 1 cup final in those 3 seasons (League Cup having been 3.1 up on aggregate).
He had a Kamikaze style who didnt know when to choke game.
Arguably the Bavarian counter part over the road is exactly the same...just better at it.

You have the best description - Kamikaze style. Cannot put this in a better way. No one will ever be success without a solid defence.

Koe man right now is reminiscient of early moyes, and far removed from the exciting footy early in Martinez time, key thing to remember though is both of them took over a team in meltdown with zero confidence and rock bottom morale, Martinez took over a team which had consistently been solid and had generally good morale and confidence and was organized, if you like he took over a team rather than groups of individuals the other two did.
That makes for me a huge difference and is why koeman needs at least a full season and two summer's to sort the mess left behind out.
Big worry for me is how the younger players will fare, but I'm also aware that although Martinez gave del, Rom, stones, and Ross, there chances and full confidence of him, ultimately he may have been bad as none of them developed any parts of there game that wasn't natural/instinctive, which is why all four are hugely flawed at 22-23 years old .

Great stuff. They won a few games by running up some goals. Buy how does that cut across what I posted? They were a team that played it long and swung in a lot of crosses. It was basic up and at 'em stuff. There's no point in comparing them with Martinez's outfit at their best. The latter were confident throughout the team on the ball and could move it around. You can contrast them both, but you cant compare them.

I'm defending his time here from the tendency to be crude and throw the baby out with the bathwater in the overall assessment. Have you seen anywhere me say I wish Martinez was still here? My position is that the feller came in and showed this club its own traditions of getting it on the deck and playing. Most people grasped that after the first season he had here and acknowledged it ('reopening of the school of science' anyone?).
I believe that in the haste to get away from any form of possession football as an extreme reaction to the overplaying last season we are in danger of accepting the old tripe way of Moyes and his neanderthal hoofball. Koeman is proving to be someone who'll accommodate that type of fan reaction and play to it. He looks like he's offering us what he feels we want to see: route one. His own team at Southampton, though basically a direct play team, mixed it up more than we've seen here with his Everton team thus far.
That ^^^ is a big reason for arguing the toss on this. The legacy of Martinez and the conclusions about it very much feed into the present and inform what's happening right now.

Both sides to this argument; we want what is best for our club, the only disagreement in my humble opinion to all posters is how to achieve this.
Is it style over substance? Is it Martinez's early success, is it Moyes' pragmatism or is it Koeman and his quest to knit us together. None of them were born Blue, but each of us were asked to trust their decision making and leadership. Personally, I'm underwhelmed by Koeman so far but recognise he needs time.
I for one don't know the secret to unlocking our trajectory to the upper echelons of the Premiership. But what I do know is that Evertonians are knowledgeable and willingly share different opinions. That's why I joined the GOT community - to hear other views, offer mine and accept that no individual will ever be right.
We are definitely a club in transition, a great history but as fans we are unsure of our place in the future. Success on the pitch brings harmony with the club and its fanbase, we are short on that in many areas. But to me, what would help, is better communication and transparency from those privileged to hold the stewardship of our great club in their hands.
So to our Board,not the fans, tell us more about the plans to move ground, tell us how you will increase our commercial revenue off the pitch, tell us more of your plans for the club, I want us to be Great again in every sense ..because we are looking for answers as success on the pitch has been too lean for far too long.

I enjoyed the football that season. The Derby and man utd at home, shat on from a high height, the atmosphere at any subsequent matches to this day at Goodison. I enjoy not clenching my arse everytime we are defending, or maybe it was something to do with the results?
He didn't really do either with any conviction, a guy who wanted free flowing attacking football had a midfield of Barry and mcarthy, with cleverly on the wing, he was pretty weird
Southampton didn't 'play long'.
They were quick and direct.
They had a midfield full of energy and wingers who played as forwards (Mane/Long) to stretch the opposition, giving their CF (usually Pelle) space to link and hold up play.
Martinez's first season was top-class, though as we got towards the end looking back, the same errors that we would go on to see for the next two seasons started creeping in.
