Romelu Lukaku

I think he's a great finisher but his game limits our play I believe that's why we played so slowly under Martinez, midfield not confident in him holding it up and play breaking down.
Not sure we'd get someone to score as many but believe someone could come in and improve the whole team play.
He'd make a great wide forward but as a target man/striker not a natural runner in behind or a 'fox in the box' hold up play to erratic.
The main thing is if he wants out as with Stones or any other play don't keep unhappy players, players will be replaced team will not fold and tumble down the leagues players are moved on all the time, good ones at that.

Villa sold their best players and went down, we keep lukaku and sell Stones.

He was abysmal last night but wasn't fit. Best be on double training sessions this week! Like literally everybody has mentioned, he's a world class goalscorer and we couldn't attract another if we sold him. Even signing midfielders is proving tough enough. The 65m isn't worth throwing away 25 goals a season and having to take a punt on another striker. Hoping we can keep him and sneak into Europe this season. If he has another 25 goal season and we fail again, then he can go with my blessing, for the right price.

Second game of pre-season last night. Even when he's fully fit he's hardly one to charge around the pitch for 90 is he?

Hopefully once the games start proper he'll get into his stride. Think he'll complete 70-80 minutes on Saturday

We actually scored more goals in the Lineker season than we did when winning the Title the following season.....acquired about the same number of points and all, IIRC.

And in actual fact we were really struggling for goals until Howard fetched Wayne Clarke in for the run in and his goals seen us over the line.

And in '85 we only scored one goal more than in '86, the Lineker ŷear.

No sir, our failure to win that in between Title was nowt to do with Gary Lineker scoring too often.....it was more about Neville Southall getting injured on a flipping Dublin rugby pitch in a friendly international

(not that Bobby Mimms did owt wrong.....he just wasn't capable of stopping certain goal bound efforts the way Neville could :()

But your point is an excellent one.

We need the goals spread around more.

When Rom's goal output tailed off after Del was dropped and then he lost interest after the Chelsea cup tie, our goal threat was negligible.

Remember too the days of Gordon Lee at Newcastle when Supermac was strutting his stuff on Tyneside, wowing the locals with goals a-plenty and yet they diced with the lower levels of the old First Division.

Lee, ever the pragmatist, decided that one man scoring oodles of goals could and should be sacrificed for the greater good of the team, so he took a brave, in view of their horse-punching prowess, decision to take on the ire of the Toon Army by selling MacDonald to Arsenal. The following season, Newcastle spread the goals around and they shot up the league table.

One man bagging the majority of the goals does not guarantee team success, a more rounded team effort aka the Blues without Lineker, great for us though he undoubtedly was, who saw the likes of Sharp, Sheedy, Heath, Steven etc all bag ten or more and the league title was won.

We need to keep Lukaku because he is a proven goalscorer, but we also need to find someone to play alongside him to take pressure off him and give the team more attacking options and outlets.

Diversification in our attacking options will reap the rewards, and Rom and the rest will achieve their CL ambitions quicker and with Everton !!!

The goals were spread about in Martinez first season.. Lukaku 16, Naismith and Mirallas 8, Barkley and Coleman 7, Baines 6. I think it's more to do with the team not being suited to the slow build up play RM brought in after that than having players relying on the striker to score the goals.

The money being offered for Stones and Lukaku is ridiculous. We can replace Stones, but it'll be difficult to replace Lukaku with a good enough player who is willing to come to us. Money in the bank won't score us goals.

Last night, thought that Rom played with more enthusiasm and showed more interest than I was expecting. Got himself out wide into the channels which is clearly where Koeman wants the passing to be going.

Trying to clutch at straws he is more minded to sign the new contract with us!

spot on, i've said it before there's a genuine lack of top goalscorers in world football, the euros showed that was the case, chelsea are now finding that is the case wanting to but back someone they sold just 2 years ago, for triple the price.

Dominic King in the Mail, he normally knows what he's talking about when it comes to Everton

Ronald Koeman ready to refuse sale of Romelu Lukaku after Chelsea's attempts to unsettle star striker infuriate Everton
  • Ronald Koeman unhappy with attempts to unsettle striker Romelu Lukaku
  • Everton prepared to take same stance as with John Stones 12 months ago
  • Chelsea confident they can bring former player back to Stanford Bridge
  • Manager wants to keep Lukaku and Everton have opened contract talks
Chelsea’s attempts to unsettle Romelu Lukaku have infuriated Everton, who are ready to take the same stance they adopted with John Stones 12 months ago by refusing to sell.

Though Chelsea remain confident they will take their former player back to Stamford Bridge with an offer of £65million plus Loic Remy, Everton say they have yet to receive any kind of contact — nor do they intend to encourage it.

Lukaku has been agitating for a move for most of the summer, frequently speaking about it, but it is Everton’s intention to keep him and they have opened talks about extending his contract, which has three years to run.

good, this is exactly what we need, a one strike you're out rule

first whiff of media and agent agitating and we aren't selling them to you
they'll soon learn
