Romelu Lukaku

....critical that he didn't lead the line well, critical that he didn't demand that 2nd half free kick off Barkley but he's gold dust because he scores goals.

I think Barkley should be taking a lot more of our fee kicks to be fair. His technique is fantastic and he strikes the ball brilliantly. I think Barkley should be having more shots full stop mind.

I appreciate for a lot of people 28 million (in all likelihood 25 million down with 5 knocked off due to the loan fee) is a huge price. For Everton it's big money. However in the context of the PL it's not a massive fee. He is not currently the rounded player and I doubt ever will be the best at linking up play.

However he is a goal threat. What's that, 6 goals in 8 games so far this season? He may not do everything people want, but he has an awful lot of positives. And when he's in the mood like last night he will win games for us.

I have the feeling that when we play fast, he becomes the unstoppable beast. It's when we play slowly (which we still do too often) that his faults come to the surface. It doesn't even matter whether Kone is by his side (although they complement each other) or we play with wingers.

Play quickly and all of a sudden he can hold up a ball or flip it aside and score.

There will always be games when the tempo is slower mate. Pulis quite clearly sent his team out last night to "bore us out". You're right, we are at our best when we play quickly, but how do you play quickly when all the space in the final third is squeezed by a defensive side. I think it's a bit of an art to be honest, and Pulis is definitely underrated.

Lukaku - Against teams like that we need the ball to stick when its played into him. He needs to pin centre backs and bring others into play.

The second half wasn't much quicker than the first, the change was Rom realising that he has to take responsibility for this team. Perhaps its unfair on a player still very young, but he knew full well what he was signing up for last year.

He's missing that maturity imo in understanding his role.

what frustrates me is geri always looks to put that low cross in at the near post, in that really dangerous area between the keeper and the centre half.

some nonce like lawrenson would probably call it the 'corridor of uncertainty'

yet lukaku's just never onto it and it ends up flashing past the defence. he rarely gets himself right in teh six yard box like an owen or a solksjaer would

Did anyone see him immediately after the first goal? Grabs the ball, runs to the centre circle and shouts at all his teammates, geeing them up and shouting 'we can do this'. I loved it.

That's exactly the attitude we need if we're going to go anywhere and exactly the attitude that won us the game. And it's exactly why I'll never mind him saying ambitious things in interviews etc.

Erm? Did you see him get on the end of two of Geri's other crosses though?

I am a fan of him. I appreciate he has no first touch to speak of, but I like him.

Obviously no player is beyond criticism, but I feel that last year people were complaining that after getting 20 during a bad season, "Lukaku is crap, all he does is score goals"

But everyone loved Linekar and Yakubu. We're fickle fans aren't we.

I agree with most of what you say. But what I mean with fast is not just running and harder passes, but quicker crosses. Not the endless lateral passing around, but like with his two goals: no hesitating or giving another back pass but an immediate cross from Del. He and Kev are the only two who can do that. Unfortunately they often go for another dribble or shot themselves. But still Mirallas and Del hold the key imo.
Barkley could also do that with through passes but he still loves to run with the ball. presumably because he's also very good at it.

I thought they did a great job of doing that until they for some reason just went to poo!

I think if we didn't get that 1st goal so quickly it would of been a completely different story.

From what it seems with west brom this season they either concede none, or 3 & 4 goals

His 1st goal yesterday was not an effort on goal, it was a miscontrol

We have seen the full spectrum of Lukaku this season. Southampton away he destroyed them with his power and pace, Chelsea he scared them to death but didn't get the goal he deserved. Swansea away he was terrible and against Barnsley and West Brom he has been slaughtered and slotted.

Guess we have to suck it up with him and accept that at times he will look terrible but he WILL score goals. What would we rather have, a forward with great close control who gets 8-10 goals a season or a monster who gets 20+ a season and sometimes looks like a pub player and will often go from the sublime to the ridiculous in the same game?

He is a very good premier league player when on his game and a boss slotter. I think you can see why Mourinho was happy to let him go though as his overall play and touch are sometimes very off.
