He was so boss playing an italian style man marker role on Silva, Maldini-esque. Needs to produce that sort of intelligent display consistently.
 
It shows that when you give him the 1 position and give him the right instructions, he'll perform.

Untill now he's played here, there, and everywhere with no clear instructions on what he should be doing every week
 
Maybe freeing up Fellaini and giving Rodwell a more disciplined role is the way forward?

At the moment I'd much rather see Fellaini in and around the penalty area than Rodwell. I know Fellaini's preferred position is central midfield; there's no reason why he can't continue to play there, but with a license to roam a little bit more. His ball retention is a valuable asset to us, and we could definitely make use of his presence in the penalty area.

Moyes trusted Rodwell with an important role today, knowing full well Fellaini would be needed to hold the ball up at the other end in order to relieve the pressure City would place us under for large spells, and to an extent it worked well.

My only complaint is that we don't have a mobile striker to play up top.
 

Agreed. Rodwell and Distin were motm. Rodwell's card was harsh, but instead of losing his cool, he seemed to gain it and really stepped up against a difficult task. Super glad no one got tossed and we aren't facing suspensions for the derby too.
 
One of his best performances today I'd say kept Silva out of the game for the majority. He was unlucky to get booked for his first foul but he kept his nerve well. Perhaps having Rodwell as a defensive midfielder and giving Fellaini a greater scope to roam is the way forward.
 

He can be a great modern day defensive mid. He's good defensively, but has a bit more talent on the ball than a centre back, He can pass it well and with confidence can even spray good long balls. He's also very athletic and has a decent shot.

He'd be wasted at CB for me but could be a class defensive mid.

Really?

He had the opportunity to defend. He was given a task he was comfortable with - and he done it well.

Centre back is where he developed his game, where he earned himself a professional contract - change Silva with Aguero - and he'll do well. He'd bring the ball out of defence well too.

Moyes always maintained he'd revert him back to a centre half - when?

Fellaini is the better holding midfielder by some margin - asking both to do the same job doesn't work, and we shouldn't be diluting either by telling them to take on a more advanced role.

Round peg, square holes all the friggin time with us.

It's like we are diluting every player we have - Gerard Houllier style.

We had five players out of position today - even Drenthe when he come on was put right wing.
 
The reason I'd be reluctant to see Rodwell at CB is his positional sense, of which he has shown to have roughly none. Man-marking a player is much more simple a job than reading a game well in central defense for 90 minutes. If he started playing there again now he could very well be a brilliant CB in three years, but he'd be a big risk in the present.

Watched a replay today and Rodwell is a CB. Everyone is talking about the impact Phil Jones has made at Man Utd, there's no reason Rodwell couldn't be that player.
