Why can't you use the mountain bike ? Just makes it a bit harder that's all, you get the same workout and don't have to go as far.
oh sorry I forgot, EVERYONE ELSE is buying a racer and the Sky top from JJB won't suit a mountain bike.

Not a good idea at all I'm afraid. Mountainbikes are simply not fit for the purpose of riding for extended periods on the road. I know it seems like an awfully logical answer, but you might as well be asking someone why they don't drive a dune buggy to work, as it'd be cheaper than buying a car.
OP if you have someone who knows bikes, don't write off a 2nd-hand ex-racer. There are some amazing deals to be had out there, really beautiful bikes for well under £1000. But just like a car, it needs to be looked over by experienced eyes first, 98% of road bikes will have been crashed at some point!
Well, it depends on whether you live near any hills and use them for what they are intended for, of course....:huh:Road bikes are a million times better, mountain bikes have always been a fad!
To be honest I dont find riding a mountain bike long distance a problem, I just got some road tyres fitted and makes life a lot easier. I did the London to Brighton on my mountain bike and it was great, I've not ridden a road bike before so might not know what I'm missing but I dont think a mountain bike with decent tyres is all that bad tbh.
You need to get a road bike, honestly. After 1 or 2 weeks you'll realise how uncomfortable mountainbikes are. I started out on a MTB too, and expected a roadbike to be the same, just faster. I was wrong!

I'm always slightly put off road bikes as they look a bit flimsy for my considerable frame, whereas my mountain bike feels solid. I'm 6ft 4 and 18 stone and I always imagine destroying a road bike if I got on it

*makes note that efc82 will bottom the suspension out.
