Why’s it surprising? All it is is a 12 month extension; he still had 4 years left on it anyway IIRC.

Which was always the Brands strategy. We recognize we can't keep these players forever at our current level, so we ensure they develop, give their best to the club whilst they do and then invest the proceeds in an upgrade.

Great news that he's re-signed. As you point out, he had plenty of time left so the motivations for this were likely a hefty pay-rise to keep him onside.

Top players, and make no mistake he is absolutely a top player, always start to agitate when they aren't at the level they need to be - we've seen it countless times before.

We'll probably have to do this dance again in the next 12-18 months if he continues to improve and the club doesn't start to push up the table.
