There's loads of different combinations I'd love to see, to be honest.

Howard
Coleman Jagielka Distin Baines
Fellaini Rodwell
Barkley Osman Drenthe
Saha

This is why I hate the argument that Moyes' current hoofball bonanza is the best we can achieve, and just him "working with what he's got". We still have some brilliant footballers, and that line of thought does them a disservice.

As ever, we need a winger and a striker.

As ever, we're not going to get one

HEITINGA JAGS DISTIN

COLEMAN RODWELL FELLAINI DRENTHE BAINES

BARKLEY

VELLIOS/SAHA ( if fit )

3-5-2 coleman and baines have good enough engines to get up and down the flanks.

I like this idea a lot, the issue being that when Saha's not fit it'll be Cahill up front, where I don't love him playing. Unless Straq actually gets games.

A quick note to all the 3-5-2 brigade with baines as a wingback.... You do realise he would then be marked every game by both winger and full back instead of being a free man overlapping are winger having nearly unlimited space?

There's a reason no teams play 3-5-2 anymore and his name is Steve mclaren!?!?!

"Working with what he's got" rfus hit the nail on the head there... I think his attitude has been appauling, it's his job as a manager to get the best out of his squad money or no money. Theres enough quality in the squad to play decent football. Even with money I dont think we will see dramatic changes with Moyes, he's too old fashioned and set in his ways and wont move with the times. Not to mention the players he's ruins like billy and yak. 22m he spent on them two never to play them or play out of position. JOKE!

Yeah I think there's a reason Baines is a fullback. For all his talents he's not a tricky winger, he's just a sublime overlapping fullback.

It's the same reason I hate seeing Coleman at RM and want to see him at RB, really. They don't have Drenthe's ability to take people on directly, but they do have a burst of pace and the energy to get forward and back all game. And in Baines' case he also has the best left-footed delivery in the league, which he can utilise best from the space created by the man in front of him, as he overlaps.

We need a 10-15 goal a season striker, a decent winger and Drenthe permanently. That can't happen until investment comes or Moyes miraculously gets us a couple of quality players for buttons. When Distin passes his sell by date, Saha does similar and Neville retires (all likely to be at the end of this season) we'll also need to replace them. That's an impossible task without money. I foresee Felli/Baines' departure if we don't get a buyer soon. God I hope McAleny, Rodders, Barkley and Green all come good. We need them badly.

If we are forced to cash in a major asset, I think it has to be one of Fell or Rodders. They seem to be similar players (not identical, just similar) and a squad as skint as us probably can not afford to keep both when we are so lacking in other areas.

i do agree with you to some extent but it depends how the opposition set up against you also, the players themselves should be able to adjust within the game if they are being marked out of it or being over-run in an area of the pitch,,,,thats what professional players are paid to do,,,,also moyes would be expected to suss it within the first 10 mins of a game.

Howard

Jagielka - Heitinga - Distin
Coleman - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Baines

Rodwell - Fellaini - Barkley

Bily

Vellios

Said it for a few seasons, this formation would suit our defence perfectly...And if Bily gets sold then put Osman or Cahill in there, or Drenthe if he can play well in the centre.

Heitinga could possibly pull this off. Or maybe even Rodwell, if, as some suggest, he's really a defender.

the bottom of these is the one that i would most like to see, but possibly with saha replacing ossie (keeping dm's, playing drenthe and gueye as more advanced and saha in whole created by velios pushing on).

if that were to ever happen, i would be happier with jags in the middle of a back 3 pushing heitinga more to the right handside and distin more to the left. Heitinga doesn't look as comfortable on the ball as jags in my opinion so every pass he played would prob be a 60 yard hoof, i think jags has the ability to be a football playing centre back and could carry the ball out of the defence calmly and link up play with the midfield instead of bypassing it all the time with hoofing the ball in the air.

this was in reply to jamo martinez post by the way ha ha
