Couple of questions lads:
Is it worth the extra to get a 4G phone right now? I want something like a galaxy S3 but £36 a month on 4G through T-mobile sounds a bit stiff. I'm not arsed about having the latest and greatest but do want something good.
I also want to keep my current defy handset for mountain biking as it's a very rugged phone. What's the best way of having an internet-enabled phone (for maps) for occasional use? I was thinking you could just swap the sims over but maybe they would be different and you can't? Can you get a pay as you go sim with a data quota?
Thks - I know nowt about phones really.
Please be aware that you don't get 4G on T mobile. They use the EE network, but the speeds are restricted to 3G only. You have to go direct with EE to get 4G
I've used 4G on my iPad mini a few times, and the speeds are variable. My mate gets faster speeds out of using Dual channel on his Galaxy note LTE on the Three network (3G).
Unless you need the speed, 3G should be fine. Web pages won't load faster really, but obviously videos will. Music is too small in terms of file size to be affected much by the speed, unless you're wanting an entire album to whizz down fast. One song at a time will be fine, your album will be loaded on 3G before you've got through the first track anyway.
Why not get a Nexus 4 Sim free:
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_4_16gb
It's £290 with postage. You'll get Google maps on there for free, which has turn by turn directions. You'll get updates as soon as they're released, stock Android, and you can pick up a decent sim only contract for a much lower ongoing cost. Example
£21 Unlimited calls, text and data on T mobile. Over the 2 years thats £129 saving over the deal you're considering.
Virgin also offer great sim only deals, again using the EE network
Top cashback and Quidco will give you some cashback for the sim only offer too.
The sim will be different to your ruggedised phone, but if you're only using the ruggerdised phone occasionally you can get an Ovivo sim. £10 for the sim, and you'll get 100 mins and 100 texts free every month with no need to top up, uses the Vodafone network. If your'e just using the phone for emergencies, it could be the one to go for. With unlimited calls on the T mobile sim only, you could just forward all of your calls to your mountain biking handset when you're out and about

If you want to swap the sims over, you just need a sim adapter - Very easy to get hold of
