Rugby Union.

It's completely incomparable here - he's mixed six nations (where he got some corking home fixtures) and what essentially amounts to friendlies this autumn and a pretty talented squad wasted under previous management; this Everton side is full of rot and all our games in the league (and cup) are 'meaningful'

'Merely being polite'? Erm, ok. Fair enough...

Not really though are they... They're far more than that. England have had to be superb to go unbeaten this year, and an enormous part of that is down to the decision making of their coaches. I have to say I agree with AndyC that in certain games more than others this year, Koeman has been bold in his decision making, and it's something that I (and I presume most of us) would like to see more of.

I'm assuming that is what he is getting at, as opposed to the actually quality of the players.

EDIT: decided to actually read the other pages, and I think what I'm trying to say has already been said (more eloquently...)

The games are friendlies. When England beat Germany in Germany last year it was great, but they were still friendlies. Same is happening with these Autumn Internationals.

Don't agree that Koeman has been bold with his decisions either. He's by and large given us more Martinez formation football. It's tosh.

We'll have to disagree there. Barring World Cup warm-up games, there is not really such thing as a friendly in rugby when playing against another top 10 international side. They are hugely significant games that both sides care hugely about.

Let's not forget England's matches in Oz the summer also. Those matches were not friendly.

No they wernt. They were Test Matches. England won the Cook Cup.

You dont have friendly international Rugby matches.

Cook Cup is like the Calcutta Cup - all very nice but it's like Phil Neville lifting that trophy against DC United or whatever it was - fairly meaningless.

Jones will be judged on the Six Nations and next World Cup - in the same way that Koemoyes will be judged (pretty harshly) if he fails to win one of the next two games and takes us over the 1 win in 10 mark

Sure he will. Didnt he win the last 6 Nations with a Grand Slam though? Anyrate, Cook Cup or not, todays Test Match was not a friendly.

But in the scheme of things - essentially what Jones will be judged on - not that important.

If we are going back to talking about Koeman though, should we rejoin the Koeman thread?

(Asking for a friend, not me)

All a bit random isnt it!

To equate Everton winning a pre-season friendly against DC United to England winning an Autumn International against Australia is, quite frankly, mind-boggling.

I would go as far as to say that when Jones first got the job, beating the Southern Hemisphere sides in the summer and autumn would have been seen as much more important than the Six Nations due to the gulf in quality between the sides - if you're going to win a World Cup, you're not threatened by Ireland, Scotland & Wales, you're threatened by NZ, SA & AUS. This has slightly changed for 2017 with the NH teams becoming much stronger, but the general point still stands I think.

ANYWAY, enough rugby chat, 10-0 to everton, hibbert with 4

Trying to think if there has been a time where he has been bold with his decisions, struggling to find one, maybe dropping Barkley, not exactly that bold considering Barkley wasn't at his best at the time though.
