Because football club support is singular. Favouring another club is common, but how can you be a fan of two (or three or four for that matter?). The word fan as an abbreviation of fanatic tells you that emotion cant be divided.

i'm a rangers fan and everton, gers fans are up there with the best, 50,000 ave in the lowest tier of scottish football, not many clubs could do that

the everton support is great but so is rangers and if you don't agree, no problem, we all have our own opinions
