There's no rhyme or reason to the recruitment and Brands does have to take his share of that. It seems his RB targets were all over the shop. Perhaps Dumfries was first choice and then TL, Patterson were the second group? From what I was told, Benitez didn't want to bid any more for Patterson (which is fine) and didn't want AMN on a permanent, only a loan.
Btw, the Athletic article itself details how the main concern was Dumfries' defensive ability for the outlay. However, £12m is a tiny fee comparatively. It's just that £12m for Everton was a big stretch at the time.
