No, he was really sick. The last story I read was he could not get a life saving operation for false teeth because he was too frail. But the reason he was frail was he needed to eat solid food after his throat cancer.

A horrible way to go.

RIP Alex.

Just confirmed that he has died. Really sad, he was a hero of mine. I knew him well as he grew up with my uncle. Sad sad news.

AND MINE , mate .

Me Da' used to say , he had won DECENT dough on 2 people ; Alex Higgins and Lester Piggott .

Shame . Life kicked him as much as it kissed him , and with his talent , it kissed him a lot .

R.I.P.

I saw him last week and as usual he said he was feeling great. He looked like a walking skeleton though, and i sort of knew it was only a matter of time. He was always in the bookies, spent his day between there and the pub. Did not give up drinking or smoking right to the end.

To me arl man's generation , and to me , personally ; LEGEND , btw .

Respect .

Too young to have watched him play but his name is always mentioned in terms of the greatest players there's ever been. RIP

Watched him as a kid. He could clear the table in the time it would take Cliff Thorburn to take one shot

I see your Cliff Thorburn and raise you Terry Griffiths. The Hurricane could have slotted the entire table, gone round the newsagents next to the Crucible for a packet of Benson and Hedges and got back before the Welshman had taken his seat.
