For arguments sake, I’d say Roberto Baggio was possibly comparable to Messi and he peaked in the mid 90’s. Messi was already a mega star by the 10’

You are honestly suggesting Baggio was as good as Messi? I’m not doubting he was a world class footballer, but not every world class player is as good as Messi, come on. This fella has been completely rewriting the record books and redefining the game for years and years consistently, it’s nothing other than nostalgia bias to say Baggio or anyone else from that era was on that level.

I think you can make an argument for other players on the grounds of level of influence on the game, and performance relative to their peers. Pele, Maradona, Cruyff...these are valid shouts under those criteria. Today's players play in an era where they're superior physical specimens, thanks to all the sport science. They win against the old-timers.

Can't see it with Baggio, though. Great player, not quite in those players' league in terms of leaving the game different than they found it.
