Quantity Vs Quality?

Neiler

Player Valuation: £100m
Just having a bit of a think to myself on transfers. Anyone else notice that the summers where we tend to have a bit of money to spend and bring a lot of players - the following season we tend to finish poorer.

This year we have added:

Mustafi
Peterlan
Garbutt
Annoux
Distin
Heitinga
Billy
Neil

Largely brought about by the Lescott cash

It seems very similar to 05/06 were we finished 11th after spending the Rooney cash and bringing in:

Ruddy
Davies
Kroldrup
Neville
Arteta
Ferrari
Valente
Van der Meyde

I suppose my point boils down to with a limited budget, is it better useing the entire buget on one or two quality players for example: Baines, Yak 07/08 and Fellaini 08/09 or padding out the squad in terms of numbers?

So one maybe two players of quality vs quantity.

So one maybe two players of quality vs the above and what has proved to be the impact of a lot of change on subsequent seasons?

But look at all the transactions (coming and going) prior to (and during) season 2004/05 when we finished fourth. Not exactly stable in terms of squad. I think it's blend rather than time to bed in and/or numbers.

Its surely about the players bought, regardless of fees. We paid buttons for some of our best players and we spunked seriuous money on others.

Clearly we would rather sign 5-6 £15m players every Summer, but its not really possible, we still have a very small and at times injury ravaged squad.

I dont know what your trying to say Neiler mate?

And I would question the players you said we bought with the "Lescott money", we only really bought Distin, Billy, Heitinga with that money. The rest where bought for buttons or before the Judas left, cant believe you left Coleman off as well lad, you really hate him dont you?

Again though they year we finished 4th we brought in Cahill and Bent. The season before we brought in Kilbane, McFadden, Jeffers and Martin 17th. History has showen we do better birging in less then more.

Thats the question mate - although i prob didnt make it clear - minging wiht a hangover here! Are we better of spending whatever we have on one maybe two, rather then 6-8.

Ha ha didnt include any Jan signings, although Seamie could do with a haircut. They still cost money mate - Garbutt set us back at least a million.

Im sure Moyes would rather have spent that £24m for Lescott on 1 player, but he cant, hes gotta try and build a squad. His hands are tied with regards to money and players available to him.

Why not he did the season before and before that padding with loans. If you look at the 05/06 players signed only two of them are still in the squad.

I wouldn't really consider the likes of Arnoux, Mustafi and Peterlin signings to be honest, they are just players who go straight into the reserve teams. We only really signed four players this summer, which isn't alot.

Lets not forget the Europa League, which automatically means you have to add strength in depth. Especially when you've had to sell one of your best players to raise the cash. You have to replace him and strengthen in other areas.

Signings are signings mate, money changes hands - I suppose many didnt feel Seamie was a signing this time last year and were all excited by Jo.

All good points and very obvious - but after adding depth to the squad in 05-06 after CL qualification we failed to qualify for Europe, it looks like after adding depth this year we may also loose out.

I understand their has to be a balance, not really taking a praticular stance as its more necissity then choice that dictates, just illustrating the facts for debate really.

That would rather more cast doubt on Moyes judgement as opposed to your title quantity or quality.
