Quality of Premier League this season

The Premier League is possibly the most entertaining league in the world but I'm not so sure it's the best.
Compare our top teams to those of Spain and Germany and quality wise we come up short.
Saying that, our top ten as a whole are pretty even with the likes of those two leagues and probably better than the French, Italian, Dutch, Belgian and Portuguese.
I watch quite a lot of European football and would say the top 4 or 5 are decent in the weaker leagues and the top 10 are decent in the English, Spanish and German leagues. Then you have the odd stand out team from poor leagues - like Zenit, Shakhtar etc.

I think this is the issue. Bar Man City and Chelsea, I doubt any teams goal for the season was to win the league, which in turn leads to the number of bottle jobs we see throughout the season. Arsenal aim to finish top 4 and as a result haven't looked like winning the league for years now. Same with Liverpool last season. Their initial aim was not to win the league, so they weren't suitably prepared and bottled it.

how can they really? look at the millions and millions the 5 of city, chelsea, united, arsenal and liverpool spend. luckily a few of them are spending a bit crapply to let others have a look it ... but they won't do that every year.

I think the best illustration of how poor the premier league is in the terms of quality is that united and liverpool could make the top 4. Both have been very poor for the majority of the season.
Chelsea (only decent team in the league) haven't got out of second gear since Xmas and they've already won the league. Heard a stat yesterday, they have only lost 3 competitive games all season out of 51 (and 1 of those was to Bradford). They are the shining light amongst the mediocrity of the rest.

They have, but like has been said earlier, even mid table teams are spending tens of millions a year on players. We spent over £30 million last summer and are struggling to get into the top half.

You have to spend millions and millions just to keep pace and then you need to spend millions and millions more to get ahead.

The best league is the Spanish league. I reckon only Chelsea from our league would get in their top 4.
Yep the best league is the spanish league. A league where 2 players score more goals than games played and score hat-tricks every week. Where two teams score about 5 goals every week and where their fans wave white towels if they only score 2 or 3; their players get abused by their fans on the rare occasion they lose.

The 2 players are the best 2 players in the world at the peak of their powers. The Spanish league generally outperforms other leagues in the CL and the EL. Best top 4 in terms of quality, best top 10. Probably 2 best club sides in Europe, at worst 2 of the top 3. Maybe some dud teams at the bottom but pound for pound the best league IMO.

Spain has 2 great teams but the Spanish league is awful and predictable, take those 2 sides from it and it would be average. Least the Premier League has regular shocks and you can on the right day get a entertaining match whoever is playing.

Would Messi and Ronaldo score the amount of goals they do if they play in the Premier league ? Both of them are on pace to score around 50 league goals AGAIN !! Let that sink in, AGAIN. La Liga does have a few decent teams, as does all the top leagues but the quality drops off dramatically once you get to around 5th and so pound for pound i don't think it is.

Wonder if FFP will have a bearing on how much more cash the reds***e will spunk up the wall for next season.
The only thing that will have a bearing on their transfer budget is how much FSG trust Brendan not to waste all the money again. FFP wasn't written for clubs like them, it was written to stop more Chelsea/City situations arising and threatening to knock Utd/Arsenal/Rs further down the pecking order. If their losses exceed FFP limits again they will just be attributed to 'infrastructure' or some other fictitious thing that's allowed. They got away with £50m losses for a stadium that never got beyond the planning stages, and the neither FA nor anyone else have any interest in seriously pursuing any FFP charge against them.

I think it's less that the league is crap and more that lower teams have a lot more money and the rich clubs can't consistently dominate them. Of the 20 teams in the league only Burnley, Villa, and Stoke didn't buy a player for more than £8 million this summer. The vast majority of those spent at least 10m on one player. That used to be a fee affordable for only the CL regulars. Now everyone can buy a 10 million pound player if they want. Alex Song is playing for West Ham, you would never of saw that calibre of player playing for that sort of side in years past.

Yes they would IMO. They would have a party against some of the teams in our league. What would you say is the best pound for pound league then if not the Spanish?

Think Man U being 4th says a lot, they have been dire most of this season.
I think this is so true, Utd are no better under Van Gaal than they were under Moyes but they got a few dodgy wins this year playing terrible football
And the purchase of di Maria has been the most laughable transfer of the season
I think the writing was on the wall for the PL when Ronaldo left a very successful ManU, slippery slope!
