Proper motivating quotations

Not the rubbish spouted by posters or those employed to improve the performance of an underpaid staff .... a place for our favourite quotations to help when we need a lift.

I'll kick off with this - I'd argue one of the greatest speeches ever written to sum up humanity. Actually makes me well up when I read it.

Carl Sagan remarking on a unique photo of earth as a speck, taken by the distant Voyager spacecraft:
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

Might not be the longest quote, but something that resonates very much with me.


Willem Arondeus amongst others, was a Dutchman who was successful in the bombing of a Public Records Office, in nazi occupied Holland.

His act’s protected many Jews living in the Netherlands.


He was executed soon after and his last words are "Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards."
 

Got this quote framed on my desk, my colleagues love it.

"Some people look at things the way they are and say why, I dream things that never were and say why not?"

By George Bernard Shaw, it's the perfect type of person to be in my opinion, always dream and strive for better.
I like this one of his:

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Does sort of explain why very creative people are often complete arseholes, but no one changed the world by just nodding their head and agreeing with everyone all the time.
