Pressing

Chelsea had all the space and room out on our flanks. The amount of balls spread out wide was alarming. We defended to narrow but the disappointing thing was the stupidity of our players rushing out to the wide man only for them to pass it into a big vacant void. If our players didn't rush out then it was basically do what they want. Our players haven't the brains to be better than average footballers.

Think the players do not have the mobility to press. They ain't quick enough to recover once the tackle was unsuccessful.

We pressed for the first 60 minutes against Spurs and haven't done it since why????? Speechless about today's performance

You can see the attempt from players now and again to press but they are not doing it as a team so if only a few players press and the others don't fill gaps then its more damage than good. It opens too much space for teams that can move the ball quickly. Our players cannot cope with being pressed either for 2 possible reasons....no one has created space to receive a pass and the player on the ball expects too much time. The only player I see move the ball quickly for us is Gueye. We don't have enough players with speed of thought to be a fluid team hence the sideways and back passes.

You have to relieve the pressure and you either do that by playing round the press or by resisting it. When Davies came on at one moment Kante rushed him but Davies shrugged him off, held possession and slipped it behind him. The next time Kante didn't bother. Barkley Barry and Cleverley simply don't have the application or aggression to do this and sadly we are a million miles away from having players who can play around a team pressing as quickly as Chelsea.
