Fulfilling his role as president.

there should be "civil discussion" not some of what we've seen happening of late over there.

thats what the executive branch is meant to do where there's fractious legislative branches.

tone it down especially after something like that.

I suppose these incidents can be seen as food and drink for a politician, but I think he's genuinely reached out to both sides of the aisle there. And yes, the rhetoric did need to be toned down.

An' YES , IT WAS STATESMAN LIKE ,...

That was the term I was looking for. (y)

From all accounts he's been a bit weak as a president, but there's no doubting how good an orator he can be.

He's been a indecisive over domestic matters, for sure. Deliberates way too long - which I'd imagine is not a positive in US politics. Seems to be into his stride now though. The economy is growing slowly again and that's the issue that'll either get him re-elected or kicked out.

Great speaker , But he's a puppet , Not since JFK has there been a President who was willing to change the whole system of American politics for good , He was gonna split up the CIA , Pull the plug on the Federal Reserve , He also knew about the secret societies that were trying to manipulate and force his hand..They made him look a fool at the Bay Of Pigs invasion...

Ultimately all this cumulated in his assassination by the Military–industrial complex , not by one lone nut..

Most of you here know that I'm not a fan.

That said, it was an outstanding speech and set exactly the right tone.

...what we can’t do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on one another. As we discuss these issues, let each of us do so with a good dose of humility. Rather than pointing fingers or assigning blame, let us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy, and remind ourselves of all the ways our hopes and dreams are bound together.

After all, that’s what most of us do when we lose someone in our family – especially if the loss is unexpected. We’re shaken from our routines, and forced to look inward. We reflect on the past. Did we spend enough time with an aging parent, we wonder. Did we express our gratitude for all the sacrifices they made for us? Did we tell a spouse just how desperately we loved them, not just once in awhile but every single day?

Agreed. It was very savvy, but it sounded convincing and heartfelt. Probably a defining moment in both his presidency and in US political discourse.

First statement I have agreed with you on. Obama set a very good tone last night and has always been very articulate but he is as hollow as they come as are most people in power these days. JFK was the last President that the strings weren't being pulled on and you know what happen to him.

Back, and to the side, back, and to the side.
