The palace game got me thinking of other postponed games.

My first one was WBA away in the early 70's. Got off the train at Smethick I think. Police escorted us to the ground through the snow. On reaching the ground the police informed us that the game had been cancelled about an hour and a half earlier. Lots of angry fans asking the police why they had marched us to the ground. I think they didn't want us walking around Smethick as we had to get the special back at the same time. They marched us back to the station and tried containing us in the station. If my memory serves me right this was only a very small station and we were packed in like sardines. Any way after some time we managed to break out and soon we were all over Smethick. Comedy ensured with the coppers trying to round us up and get us back to the station. The coppers helmets made great targets for the snowballs. To avoid being caught by the the coppers I dived into a library. Thought I was safe until I went through the doors and the place was packed with fellow blues. 10 mins later coppers burst in told us to put the books down and marched us back the station. Went on like this for hours with the cat and mouse games and dribs and drabs of blues being rounded up. On the platform a train carrying wolves fans stopped and the fun and games continued.

Other game I remember was the Bolton game. I was with mates in a car snow was terrible. We got near the ground just after half time. Got out the car and walked up to the ground only to see loads fans coming the other way telling us that the game had been abandoned.

Anyone else think of any others?

Didn't we have one off against Leeds when Smith was the manager? im sure we did, police worried about the roads around Walton not being gritted or something one winter

Postponed matches at Goodison that I can think of:

Everton vs Crystal Palace - Feb 12, 2014 - Damage to nearby buildings.
Everton vs Birmingham - Dec 26, 2010 - Freezing temperatures damaged Goodison plumbing.
Everton vs Leeds - Dec 30, 2000 - Snow & ice around the ground.

Other somewhat recent postponements I recall:

Chelsea vs Everton - Aug 13, 1997 - Match postponed due to building work required at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool vs Everton at Anfield - Oct 20, 1996 - Waterlogged pitch.

The last Everton game to actually be abandoned was Bolton vs Everton on Jan 1, 1979, abandoned at half time due to a blizzard on an already frozen pitch. That was the day Peter Reid broke his leg playing for Bolton as well.

That's a great story mate. I'm laughing to myself thinking about loads of blues in the library pretending to read books and trying to look innocent when the cops come in. Brilliant.

So were we due to play a midweek game at Stamford Bridge for the second game in 1997? And presumably we were going to play Bolton or Derby in game 3 on 16th August 1997 but the grounds weren't finished in time?

I always wondered why in that particular season we started off with three straight home games.

Boxing day game with Birmingham a few years back. Pipes all froze so there was no water at the ground! One way to ruin Christmas.
