I wasn't, have I missed something? The most commonly spoken languages in South Africa are Zulu, Africans, and Xhosa.

He's from Joburg where the predominant language is English. Also, most inhabitants of urban areas of South Africa can speak or understand English even though it is not their 'first language' spoken at home.

I thought the Nguni languages were most predominantly spoken in SA, but hey I've been wrong before.

They are in general. The biggest cities are a bit different though (the exception being Soweto for obvious reasons). Due to historical settlement patterns of the colonial inhabitants, and the constitutional and commercial language being English, there is a tendency towards English being spoken either as a first language or secondary to Afrikaans. The public educational system is also predominantly in English in the cities as well.
