Philippe Senderos

At that price, I don't think you'll go far wrong with Phil.

He can be a solid backup for you, and, if you're patient, might yet develop into an excellent defender. I'm a bit disappointed he didn't get one more season, especially as we've still got obnoxious gits like Silvestre still at the club.

I do hope that Moyes will keep faith in him if he settles into a good run of form though. Wenger would always drop him in favour of his favourites, and he never really settled.

So back up with time to develop rather than someone to throw in against your lot opening day of the season?b)

A friend of mine (an EFC supporter) saw several Everton jerseys in Las Vegas last weekend... more proof that the USA is Everton's next frontier.

Possibly connecting on their flights to Salt Lake City for the MLS All Star Match.

When I flew to Salt Lake a few years back to watch Everton, I had to connect through Las Vegas.

Hey guys.

I'm an Arsenal fan, and write and moderate over at Arsenal Mania. Just thought I'd sign up over here to give you a Gooner's view of big Phil, and perhaps help you understand what it is you'll be getting.

Senderos has been a player that used to divide a lot of Arsenal fans. For a long time, many people thought he was the second coming of Tony Adams - both big guys, both good in the air, both with a lot of heart on the pitch, and both prone to making a lot of errors in the early years of their career. Tactically, he was one of the best defenders we have (though that's not saying much these days) - he may look clumsy, but he uses the ball efficiently out of defence, he holds the line pretty well, and he's good in the air.

However, he's also incredibly slow, and if a forward can get in behind him, he'll have a real hard job of making up the ground, and that is if he doesn't bring him down on the way through. He's a very smart guy (speaks something like 5 languages), is eloquent off the pitch, and vocal on it. However, he also really gives the impression of lacking mental toughness, and if something goes wrong (as it often does with Phil), a bit of an individual collapse is not out of the question. Oh, and whatever you do, if you play against Didier Drogba, don't even let Senderos in the stadium - he's stitched him up more times than a Women's Institute knitting class.

Overall, he's a talented guy, but not really tough upstairs, and that has cost him over the last few seasons. With a strong leader next to him, he could well flourish into an excellent defender (Jagielka maybe?), but all in all I was a little bit surprised that Moyes went for him.

Hope that helps.
Welcome. Always nice to hear from fans from other clubs on here, as long as they stay civil. :)

I don't think Senderos will become a regular starter for us, at least not when all our central defenders are healthy. Jags-Lescott is our primary pairing in the middle. Yobo and Senderos would probably become subs and/or get nods against weaker teams or when Jags/Lescott is injured or need a rest. Hopefully we'll go further in Europe this season than the previous one where we bowed out to Standard Liege, and that means 8 more games in the Autumn.

With Senderos we'd get a fourth reliable CD and since Jags are injured at the moment we need cover back there. We don't really have time to groom another unproven CD into the first squad so another experienced defender is great, especially since Lescott is our cover for Baines on LB.

On SSN, the Swiss FA have said that this is a done deal. No money mentioned but they say he has joined.

Not to bad IMO and its good cover. He's only young and if anyone can sort out a player its Moyes.

Lack of pace isn't a great hadicap. Jags isn't too hot either when it comes to pace.
The key is reading of the game and organisation of the defence.

Senderos would be a good signing, whether we manage to keep JL or not.

He's still only 24, which was Lescott's age when we bought him, i.e. young enough to still improve considerably.

Hes still young, he has many flaws in his game, im sure they will get ironed out. Makings of a good player I think, could prove decent. Will have a few shockers at times, but dont all our defenders.

Senderos has a lot of talent i beleive he will do well for us, i have seen him make a lot of gaffes mainly due to his lack of pace and well sometimes his head drops and he looses confidence.

Season 2006-2007 he was one of the best central defenders in the League but mentaly something happened the following season and he lost all confidence. Moyes will turn his career around and if the fee is 2.5mill that i have seen being quoted thats a steal. Ill put it this way hes a better centre half then Jags was before he signed.

Hopefully Senderos weakness won't be much of one here. He's slow yes, but our CD's don't go as high up during regular play so he won't have as long to run back if we loose the ball.

Aye pace wont be an issue, our defenders sit very deep as our full backs push on, while in a 451 the DM allows our centre backs to get back in positition.

On the OS:
Everton have confirmed they are in negotiations with Arsenal over the transfer of Philippe Senderos.

Chairman Bill Kenwright revealed the talks but explained that a deal has not yet been concluded.

Central defender Senderos, 24, joined Arsenal in 2003 and has made over 100 appearances for the Gunners.

He was on loan at AC Milan last season, playing 15 times.

Senderos is also a regular in the Swiss national team.

The Everton Chairman said: "We have been negotiating with Arsenal for the transfer of Philippe.

"Nothing has been concluded yet but talks are on going.
