What a horrible, horrible captain he was. Truth is, no other club with European ambitions would ever have touched him. He was at United because he was a 'utility' player, but even then he was deemed surplus to requirements. The fact that he constantly belittles us when we provided him with the chance to not just play for, but captain a club far beyond his ability level still rankles.

He is the epitome of the loser mentality that pervaded Moyes' Everton and has remained ever since like a cancer. The knife to the gunfight brigade has fallen apart as soon as more has been expected of them. Moyes built a decent team but set low expectations for them all the time. Had a manager with vision had that squad, we would have broken that glass ceiling on a couple of occasions. Neville was a big part of that - never a proper captain.

Also, we should be focussing on the derby for a full week before the match as it was an important match. If we could have taken 6 points off them and a couple more wins against the big sides, that would have been enough to break into the group above for many of those seasons. The fact that he says we focussed on the derby for so long and were still so appalling in them merely serves to show how pathetic the mentality was.

Just because we have been through a period of upheaval, we should never get misty-eyed about what Moyes and captain Pip did for the mentality of this club

Manc no mark, more medals than Steve.......but being captain of Everton Football Club is an honour that I reckon means something.

I understand why we signed him, whether or not he was good enough is a different question, the one thing I do reckon many years after the event is that the team that finished fourth post Rooney and a hot ball date v Villarreal wasn’t the same side and togetherness with this lad in it and an improvement on the year before.

May have been a role model professional but he was bang average in his profession at the elite level. Not good enough for United or England but apparently good enough for us at Right back, left back, centre back and centre midfield. Fingers getting pointed every where. Them them streaks in his hair?

A great prossional? Probably. An Evertonain. Doubtful. Captain hero status? Phil Neville??

Was a lot better than people give him credit for.

Yeah he was a Manc who didn’t really get us, but he was a very good captain considering he was a limited player. Got the best out of his ability though.

That whole statement shows his character.

The whole ‘would’ve like to get my feet under the table’ thing makes it seem like he rates himself as a leader.

Well mate, if you’re a leader, and you’re made captain, go in there and lead!!! Don’t worry that the bigger boys might not like it BE THE CAPTAIN.

Do you think if Rooney had been immediately made captain upon his return he’d have been worried about Jags and Bainsey getting cross? No. Because he was a leader where Neville was a little brown nose, pointing, talent lacking, nothing.

I love how he makes out that he’s some massive Manc hero and too good for Everton, when really he was in the shadow of his brothers shadow and a stain on both shirts.
