Since his poor form early on last season which can't have been helped by having Distin and Alcarez next to him, i'd say he's been the best English centre half in the past year and possibly the best centre half in the Premier League in that time.
He's been excellent and the only time he's been in better form for us was the Cup Final season in 09 where he was outstanding at before his unfortunate injury.
Sometimes he's looked out of his depth as a captain in my opinion, but never as a player who will stand up and be counted. At times last season I think he found it tough in the Captain role as he isn't the kind of player who can stir the team under negative pressure, where there was a lot last season. As I said though, he'll always put his body on the line and the players and manager obviously respect him. He's also improved a lot on the ball and I think Stones has actually helped Jags with that by being so comfortable on the ball himself.
Great to see him become England Captain, even if it is for a short time.
