Peter Reid appreciation thread

My sister used to be a Sports journalist in the North East and she got on really well with Reidy, said he was a good bloke.

The retribution that he dished out after Inchy was crocked was superb.
He made the shortlist for world footballer of the year & we have had many (if any that have done that) and the players that he finished behind in the vote would make the shortlist for the award if it was based on the last 50 years.

Midfield Generals Never Dye.

another moment I remember was him at Goodison playing for QPR & he tried to clear a corner, totally sliced it and rattled his own crossbar at the St End, the grin and look he turned around & gave proved beyond doubt his Blue Credentials.

To be fair I remember being well hacked off when people around me began giving him stick. With hindsight though his performance was beginning drop and had been for a while. He was so important to that side that he needed replacing sooner. Don't forget in those days we actually (realistically) expected to win or at least challenge for the title. Nowadays we aim to claw our way into the Europa Cup. Anyway top man, legend, hero.

Snarling, nasty, ferreting, picking up the pieces, keeping the game nice and easy and I loved him!!We've never really replaced him,Barry Horne for a time maybe, but not in Reidy's class imho.:)

there weren't many that were tbh although at the time there were 3 of them did very similar jobs i.e. Robson, Reidy & 'koff McMahon. Their way of playing and in particular the getting stuck in and tackling is something that has been pretty much removed from the modern game though.

Always thought McMahon was a coward to be honest, played up to the hard man routine, there was a difference between a tough tackle and a blatantly"over the top" one such as Marwoods on Inchy and McMahons attempt to "do" Ebbrell which backfiredlol

Sadly that is partly accurate. Iirc his performance levels were dropping and team was beginning to break up. Replacements not really gelling under Colin Harvey.....increased grumpiness all round?

That was the context yes. But it was never justified and those who hounded him from the terraces are hopefully suitably contrite now.

.....perhaps the best timer of a tackle I've seen. Him and Bracewell hunted in a pair but players chasing you down are often easy to go past because of their momentum. In the same way some players pick a pass, Reid was great at picking a tackle.

Top pro as well, I'm not sure if it was the Bayern Munich game but he played almost the entirety with a nasty stud hole in his leg.

.....Sheedy told Neil Pointon not to go in a 50/50 with McMahon because he couldn't be trusted. Needless to say he did and McMahon 'done him'. Apparently Sheedy went up to Pointon laying in agony on the ground and called him a daft 'B'. I think it was the same game where McMahon got a knock himself and Sheedy sneaked up to him and kicked him whilst he was on the ground and ran off. Had to love Kevin Sheedy.

Love that picture versus Bayern. If you look at his leg he needed stitches in that cut. Just battled on and
put a wet sponge down his sock.
A great player, we battered Bayern that night.
what an unbelievable night that was,the noise from all four corners of the ground was something else, they,Bayern were far and away the best team around in Europe around then but we took that title away from them, sadly however briefly that momentous evening.
