Every so often, when I've found myself awake abnormaly early on a Saturday, I've started a thread in recognition of a random Everton great, usually to distract us all from whatever is getting us down about things and remind us that we're best.

This week's frustration is a lack of transfer activity, and this week's player is Peter Reid. A member of possibly the greatest side we've ever had, Reid was seen by some as a risk upon signing, but more than proved his worth, essentially becoming the engine room of that side.

Take a look at this game from our last title winning season (Reid's goal is on 4:00) and discuss:

A brilliant player who had a classic combination of technical ability and will to win that made him the perfect heartbeat of the 80s team. An excellent player who brought the best out of others around him. There is no 'i' in team.

It's a shame his management career petered out. When he was Sunderland manager I'd have done anything for him to come to us.

Slightly too young to remember seeing him play for us.

.....perhaps the best timer of a tackle I've seen. Him and Bracewell hunted in a pair but players chasing you down are often easy to go past because of their momentum. In the same way some players pick a pass, Reid was great at picking a tackle.

Top pro as well, I'm not sure if it was the Bayern Munich game but he played almost the entirety with a nasty stud hole in his leg.

We haven't had anyone in the middle since Reidy, that demanded respect in the way he did. He took no prisoners, but was a great player too.

I often wonder if Kendal Mk 1, got lucky with him and Bracewell or he knew what he was doing.

Saw him at an after dinner a few years ago, pulled no punches like most of them on the circuit ( Southall the same ).
To the extent of calling Wenger a paedophile ( alleged ).

Absolute legend. He was the beating heart of the greatest Everton team ever. Always wanted him to become manager (still would to be honest). His only flaw was he was born a kopite which shows almost any handicap can be overcome.[/QUOTE]

:D That made me laugh out loud!
