Perspective-the ten years pre Moyes

It means when a person says sommat daft.

Like Gary Megson played for us in the 1990s.

I'm just saying b)

I dont post on here v often, I enjoy reading the banter etc. but today is a different sort of day, one which I hoped would be longer coming than it is but hey it was inevitable and if a club with the success, history and business model(exclude the Glazer bit!!) wants Davey Moyes to continue this legacy, then quite why a lot of posters here and on other forum cannot see what they and a good deal of others see in Moyes then more fool them, UTD and SAF have obvioulsy seen what a lot of us have and as such have made him the number 1 target. In no way am I forgetting our History, Success and all the times we have been the leaders and all the firsts that we have achieved, I am Blue through and through and I just hope we dont live to regret not sorting this out with DM much sooner at least so we may have got a Degree of compensation.

Good Luck DM, I am truly gutted that this day comes now, when I honestly believe we are close to a great team with a great manager and could have seriously challenged next year, those that disagree can argue all they like, but as the Kopite ******** Rafael once said "Fact"/s speak for themselves.

Anyway Thanks DM all the best and with a bit of luck we may get a win at Old Trafford nxt season when DM sets UTD up defensively against Jela and Michu..............sorry just woke up!!
Great post lad and fully agree.

[Our combined wages/transfers are around 14th spot - our average finish is of course not.
We reach a cup final and semi's
We got into Europe repeatedly
We were the first and one of only a couple of teams since to actually breach the top 4 in the sky era
We did this on less than 10mil.. total
His record signing was 15mil which is pennies. Doesn't even make the top 250 signings, yet we are now a properly feared club that no one wants to play against.

...I think the thread is interesting because it provides a reminder of the way we were. From my perspective it also illustrates the excellent job Moyes has done. I appreciate my view isn't shared by all on this site but I sincerely hope those dicing with relegation days return. I'm not scaremongering, I'm being realistic. The next appointment is so important. Maintaining the status quo would be a major achievement for the new Manager as I can't see anybody taking us to the next level without investment.

I think Moyes did a largely good job, here but his obvious weaknesses reached a point where we're better off now he's left.

I think Royle was a better manager but I see no reason to have a go at a man who improved us over eleven years and has left us in a really good position for whoever takes over next. I've got what I wanted, moyes has left, why should I be bitter and mean spirited and not appreciate the good job he did?

Ditto. I've always said Moyes has done a fine job in finding talent in the lower leagues that could make it in the PL and on a thread-like budget. My problem has been what he often does with said talent on the pitch in terms of lineups, tactics and subs.

His record speaks for itself, and to be honest I'd accepted the idea that it was better to remain in a safe pair of hands for as long as the board remained in charge.

However, it had to come to an end eventually, and I think now is a good time. Losing their safety net may encourage the board to finally get serious about selling, and in the meantime it'll be nice to see a fresh approach on the pitch.

Well said....

A horrible year where we survive relegation by the skin of our teeth isn't saved by one win at Anfield. I'm honestly mystified that anyone is pining for those days.

We used to go to Old Trafford and win in the 90s.....I was there the day we beat them 2-0 and Ryan Giggs made his first appearance.

We used to go to Anfield and win derby games in the 90s.......most notably on the glorious day that Kanchelskis ripped them a new one.

The never to be forgotten Sunday in April 1995 when we blew Tottenham away at Leeds in a thrilling semi final.....so much more memorable than the turgid penalty win and the second half capitulation of our two most recent semis.

Then of course there was Watto waving the Cup aloft at Wembley.

All whom were there will never forget that famous May day in '95......who will recall the moment we "clinched" fourth place a decade later, the "highlight" of this more utilitarian era.

To paraphrase The Bard in Marc Antony's funeral ovation....."the bad days at a football club live long after them....the good days are oft interred with their bones".

And the dog days of the "dour nineties" were interspersed with more highlights and thrills than the era about to close.

(y)

we also used to get regularly beat at home by the likes of QPR, Coventry, Notts Forest, Crystal Palace, Sheff Wed....

to be honest, it's like comparing apples and oranges. The game has moved on massively since the 90's. To be consistently in the top 8 and often in top 5/6 on the budget that Moyes had when most other teams are spending like crazy is some effort. And when was the last time we had 3 players in the england squad? Right now we have the best CB and LB in the country..both Moyes signings from average/rubbish teams.

Big Joe had one decent season, then joined the other 9 years of turgid s**t. We've had nearly a decade of progress.

If we only had say Sunderland's budget. :(

Oh, so "only" winning twice at Anfield in the seven years before Moyes came is of no account, is it? It's a funny kind of Evertonian whom just dismisses the fact we could win at Anfield back in those says. Serious question. Are you a Moyes fan or an Everton fan?
Sure we all hate the RS and whatnot and love to get one over on them but I'm not going to prefer an era with week after week of dour results and finishing in the bottom third of the table just because we got slightly more wins against the RS. I'm an Everton fan not a Liverpool hater (well I'm both actually but I'm an Everton fan first and therefore take do not prefer finishing 15th-17th and beating the RS to finishing 8th-4th and beating the RS slightly less often).

I also don't get this obsession some people have with away results being the most important criteria. Do you only ever go to away games? I like getting more wins and points in totality -- the mix between home and away or current top 4 v. sky 4 or whatever really doesn't matter in the slightest to me.

It matters to you and some other people I guess but you simply aren't going to convince the rest of us to care about this small slice of our overall performance (especially when the goalposts move so often -- a while back it was winning in London or beating the "top teams" regardless of home and away or them being new top 4 or old top 4 ... but after some wins over Man U and Man City etc. we had to redefine things so we were unhappy with things again).

I loved winning the Cup obviously but my overwhelming memory of the 90's is a bunch of miserable results, mostly crap football and a lot of really sub-par players. The sometime boo-boys of the last ten years like Osman would have been a regular Messi compared with a lot of the nonsense we had pretending to play football over those years. A few class players like don't get me wrong but man it was rough going there for a while.

Safe to assume there should be a don't in there mate ?

I take it you never want to "go back to" us winning Anfield derbies, then.

Well yeah, both wins we got at Anfield over the course of the decade before Moyes were great, but I preferred chasing Europe if I'm honest.
The single win we got at Old Trafford over the course of that entire decade was also good, but not sure I would replace it with a 4th place finish.
Still if those 3 games mean more to you than bringing some pride back to the club then yeah.. fume away fella.

In the Moyes era only the big spenders have won the three trophies available apart from :- Portsmouth(FA Cup) Boro, B'ham and Swansea(Lge Cup). And look where three of those are now.
Not to mention the fact that Portsmouth only had to beat Cardiff, Boro only had to beat Bolton, and Swansea only had to beat Bradford.

On the other hand, when WE got to a final, we faced Chelsea, after what must have been one of the toughest cup runs on record.

People act like we've been SO far away from winning trophies, but if we'd had the luck of the draw that some of those teams had (plus Wigan, whose run was astonishingly straightforward compared to ours in 09) we'd've DEFINITELY racked up some silverware. This year was, fair enough, a big opportunity, and we conspired to have our worst game in 10 years.

Sad fact is that in general, and freak runs through the draw aside, the big spenders now dominate all the trophies in England.
