I got given personalised plates for my birthday years ago. Sold the car to my sister in law and couldnt be bothered changing the plates. She sold the car, so don't know who is currently driving around with plates that have Perth Glory FC and my birthday as the number plate

Yes...it's done by state. So theoretically there could be 51 EFC1 plates...States plus Washington DC.
Same in Australia. WA allows up to 10 characters, no restrictions on numbers or letters, as long as it is not offensive. The ones I really hate are those that someone else has obviously already got the plate you want so you have it spell it wrong and hope no-one will notice eg Evrton, M1key, etc.
 
The only cool use of vanity plates I've ever seen is this fife and drum corps in my hometown. They had two trucks that they used for trips that, one plate was "FIFEAN" and the next was "DDRUMS" and they'd park the two next to eachother.
