Perfect Squad Depth...

With the Atsu addition. I reckon we need an attacking midfielder and a striker and possibly a centre half/right back if I'm being really greedy!

I think we've got a pretty strong First XXII.

People may disagree with me, but sometime too many new faces in the close season can be disruptive to a squad. In addition to brand new additions Besic & Atsu, you have to consider McGeedy has only played a handful of games for us and wasn't even 100% fit for most of them, and with Gibson & hopefully Kone available then the manager will have 5 additional players to be able to call upon that he didn't have for most of last season, for the net loss of Delefeou (and even he was injured for half the season). If we can land Henin and/or pull off one more on loan, I would consider us much stronger than last season.

Plus we have a lot of youngsters who need (and deserve) time on the pitch this year.

Edit: And don't forget Oviedo in the "didn't really have available last year due to injury" column.

Howard - Robles

Coleman - Hibbert (Stones, Browning, Kenny)
Baines - Oveido - Garbutt
Jags - Distin - Stones - Alcaraz (Duffy, Browning, Besic, Galloway)

Barry - McCarthy - Besic - Gibson

Mirallas - Pienaar - McGeady - Atsu

Barkley - Osman - Naismith

Lukaku - Kone (Conner, Long, Hennen)

Think that makes it's obvious where we need to add and replace.

I say give the kids a chance at the back. If people are willing to suggest that Duffy will have a solid career in the prem, even at a mid table club, that's good enough for me at 4th choice, personally I rate him.) Stones, Browning and Kenny are all highly rated and can back Coleman up at RB, Seamus is saying he is fit for the opening game.

Up top is the only real weakness I can see there, due to Kone's injury/being turd (whatever you think).

A good striking option gives us a very strong squad.

I see what ur saying but Gibson will still miss a fair few thru injury. It's the way he roll's! Not a major problem with the other 3 in the squad.

Atsu is Delefoe replacement how I see it and that will give us 4 wingers. Which should be fine even dealing with injuries here and there.

Still think defence is a issue. Alcaraz is not suddenly going to be injury free. Jags and distin suffer an injury together and we'd be reliant on stones (fine) and alcaraz (who will most likely be injured! I know we've got a couple of promising youngsters but u ain't gonna get 4th like that IMO.
Not to mention RB cover.

2 decent quality signings CB/RB & CF and I'd be well happy!

I'm hoping Kone gets a decent injury free chance this year (just to see what he's like really).......Remy would be worth a punt though....

I was trying to work that out the other day, but yes I think we only have one available League squad place left for an over 21. Wouldn't swear to it though.

We have 4 spots left (not including Atsu) as Besic and Barkley are classified as under 21s and Franciso Junior will be unregistered. Plenty of room for over 21s. We also have 8 homegrown players already so the nationality of any incoming players won't affect our squad list.

Hibbert is not good enough from what I have seen in pre season . Would rather see Stones on the right side if Coleman was not playing.

I think we're fine for CBs, really. We're already trying to fit 4 players into 2 starting places - you'd wonder how much game time Stones would get if we brought another one in. Alcarez was injured most of last season and we were fine - you have to figure that he'll be available for more games this season, too. The likes of Duffy wouldn't get a sniff in (they aren't anyway, as it is).

Actually you are right about Barkley, thought I checked before and concluded he didn't, but apparently he does qualify. Besic doesn't though, as for the 2014/2015 season he would need to be born after 1 Jan 1993 (I think I was assuming 1/1/94), and was born Sept 10, 1992. Presuming that Atsu Duffy and McAleny get listed (McAleny and Duffy may not of course), and Francisco stays on loan, we will have 2 spots available:

Over 21
Joel Robles
Tony Hibbert
Leighton Baines
Darron Gibson
Phil Jagielka
Aiden McGeady
Bryan Oviedo
Arouna Koné
Romelu Lukaku
Kevin Mirallas
Steven Naismith
Sylvain Distin
James McCarthy
Muhamed Besic
Gareth Barry
Antolin Alcaraz
Leon Osman
Steven Pienaar
Seamus Coleman
Tim Howard
Shane Duffy
Conor McAleny
Christian Atsu

Notable U21s (near cutoff)
Ross Barkley
John Stones
Luke Garbutt

Quite right about Besic, I got my dates wrong. Still two more slots after Atsu is probably all we would be looking to fill anyway and we can always try to buy/loan under 21 players (Barca again maybe?). I suspect Hibbo and Duffy are expendable on that list for the right incoming players as well. People suggesting our squad is thin are being a little pessimistic if you ask me, there's some underwhelming players on our list but we are easily covering every position (barring CF, which we desperately need).

Problem with Hibbo being expendable is that it would have to be for another right back, we are weak there. We really do have a lot of U21s looking for a bit of pitch time though, ignoring Stones and Barkley there is Luke Garbutt, Tyias Browning, Chris Long, Ryan Ledson, Conor Grant, David Henen maybe, plus anyone that Martinez can drum up from Barca or RM. Plenty of potential there.

Agree another experienced striker is needed though.
