Came across this analysis of the accuracy of newspaper transfer rumours since 2006 : http://www.footballtransferleague.co.uk/newspaper_statistics.aspx

Accuracy varies from about 30% on the Guardian to about 10% on the People and the News of the Screws. I'm surprised the accuracy rates are so high, to be honest.

I think a lot of press speculation is down to agents,Its a ideal way to get their clients noticed and if a club thinks they might be losing a player give them a better contract its win win for the agent more cash for him either way
