Former Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has revealed Everton tried to sign Michael Owen in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old has completed surprise move to Manchester United after an unhappy spell with the Magpies, and Kinnear backed Sir Alex Ferguson to get the best out of Owen.

Kinnear rarely had a fit Owen at his disposal at St James' Park and revealed the striker almost left for Goodison Park at the turn of the year.

He told Sky Sports News: "He's right up there with the best of them.
"I like to think I played with one of the best strikers in the world in Jimmy Greaves and Michael has similar attributes.

"In the last window there was a chance of him going to Everton but that fell through and now he's going to an even bigger club.

"He's a great pro, he's very dedicated, he's a really nice lad and I'm sure Alex will get the best out of him."

We spend too much time dithering, im not pointing the fingers at Moyes, just saying we take far too much time arsing about.

Thats mainly down to the fact that everybody on the board hasnt got a clue how to operate a football club.

i'm not too bothered, I got so worked up last year but i dont mind now. At the end of the day, Moyes will get someone he wants, unless we have no money and then he'll get no-one.

Too much ooooh-ing and arrgh-ing rather than giving players the pitch, the price, and take it or leave it approach. Its why other teams swoop in and we never seem to have anyone else on the radar worth pursuing...or if we do its too late.

No inside info but i think the club have something in the pipeline, why hold an Agm or a Shareholders Forum or whatever its being framed as, slap bang in the middle of summer with a load of frustrated Everton fans baying for a signing.

It really would be armagehon and the worst time of the year to organise this or the best if you had a big signing just after coming in.

Just my opinion but i would expect one or two in before July 15th.

could well be the plan, neiler, but it'd be odds-on that the club will **** it up & everybody will turn up even more wound up than they might be already.

Seen that myself, and cant help wondering why we did not get this deal tied up weeks ago. Before Uniteds interest, there is no question that he would have signed for us. Yet again, same old story of Everton messing around in the transfer market. Things need to happen fast!!

On another note, did anyone see the piece on Yakubu on SSN. 'Everton striker Yakubu hopes to return back for the start of the season and be like a new signing for Everton' ITS STARTED ALREADY!!!

Yeah i wanted him mate, what Owen has you dont loose, which is quality, on a free it was a no brainer for us.

Looks like Fergie reads my posts.

Not gutted to be honest he would have improved us, but i like what we have up front and behind, im not to pushed on transfers to be honest, i like reading and commenting on the speculation, i know we will get a few in that will hopefully push us on, but more importantly i beleive in what we have and whats coming through.

Agree totally, great to see such a positive post at this stage of the summer. (y)

I just hope we don't lose any more though!
