Over simplification. Pep had to go into the market once Garcia refused to extend, hence both Ake & Dias. Ake showed promise prior to arrival but Pep is unforgiving on errors which is why he has been relegated to the bench

They need a 3rd or 4th rotating CB and much will also depend on whether Laporte continues

Five year deal for Messi, even at a 50% pay cut, seems mental to me. He'll play two years, leave and Barca will pay up the rest of his contract, meaning it's not even a pay cut but more akin to spreading the payments over five years.

As ridiculously good as he is, given the drama around him, the expense and - critically - his age, I'd have been tempted to cut and run if I were Barca, but I assume they simply don't have the money to replace him and/or reshape the squad.

I get that view but ultimately you're going to have to transition to a post-Messi life, and giving him a five year contract that basically pays him on his current insane salary for two and a half years in full is going to financially limit what you can do during that transition.

For me it's short term versus the long term.

The next era will not include a player of Leo’s stature but to be convinced gloom & doom is around the corner because of that is to ignore that Barca generates more revenue than any sports team on the planet, has a glorious academy and a President that will correct the disastrous decade of mismanagement of Bartomeu & Rosell.
