Mixture of both, he didn't have a spirit in the dressing room but i also feel when he was in charge he didn't have the financial backing that Moyes currently has so he probably had a bad time to manage the club.

Even the likes of king kev and weir though great servents to the club weren't exactly lescott, yobo, cahill or AJ are they?

Why is everyone creditting the signing of Weir to the idiot Smith, that deal was lined up by Howard Kendall prior to his dismissal. Smith was short sighted, incompitent and surrounded himself with [Poor language removed] like Archie bullyboy knox who did so much damage to our youth system. I would not let Smith manage a hot dog stand because he'd [Poor language removed] that up with an hour. The one thing I have against BKJ is that fact he stood by the prick for so long. For anyone to come out smiling to the cameras having watched a team from our great club get embarrassed by little Tranmere Rovers who played us off Goodison Park was a disgrace, I was wanting to string the [Poor language removed] up there and then, didn't want him before he came, hated every second of his lamentable tenure and got happily pissed when he was fired.

Great to have you back monty!

My thoughts exactly.

I'd just replied in another stream whee I listed the Managers that hve been in charge during my lifetime and excusing those that managed for a few games only I completely forgot about Walter Smith and immediately thought dark days, best forgotten about ..

I also cringe when I think about that ignorant bully boy he used to drag around with him .. Archie Knox

Although we went close to financial meltdown several times under Smith he still spent £56m in 4 seasons.

Of the £56m of signings - 32 first team players - we made a profit on 2 of them - £2.5m on Dacourt and £200k on Materazzi.
This is slightly unfair as some were good servants like Weir, Stubbs and Carsley but that is a shocking record for the money he had.

We sold £48m of players, Ball, Jeffers and Dunne make up £17.5m of that and Bakayoko, Dacourt, Collins and Materazzi £15.5m with Ferguson £7.5m.

He was dour.
