When Olympics first started to allow professional athletes in, imagine if they decided to allow all the professional footballers to compete instead of this U23 cap, how prestigious would the Olympics had been? Would it had eclipsed the World Cup seeing Olympics football has longer history than the World Cup? Just imagine how different football would have been with professional footballers wanting to win an Olympics Gold before anything.

The World Cup would have been the World Cup still since the pros weren't let in until the 90s. What would have maybe been in jeopardy is the Euros since 1992 was when it first started to really get going as an actual tournament. It's possible you'd have had World Cup and Olympic cycles every two years of relatively similar importance like the Women's game sort of does.

Great win by Price. She will win gold.

Julio Cesar La Cruz just won gold at heavyweight. Not many people expected that, hes an excellent fighter but he is small at the weight. Cuba have won 3 of the 4 finals so far in the male boxing, Andy Cruz should win gold too.

If Cruz wins they will have won half of the 8 male boxing golds at this Olympics, not bad for a country with a population of 11m.

Cruz vs Davis could possibly be one of the best boxing fights ever in an Olympics. Massive fan of both.

Yes, private donors are only given room to get involved because the state has abandoned this elite level of sport funding.

And yes, people must be desperate to secure lottery cash and abuse their bodies for it.

Having to take PEDS or chummy up to a millionaire is outrageous, and those athletes wouldn't have to demean themselves like that in a better organised and run society.
I think it's also worth pointing out that "lottery funding" of medalists is a way of advertising the stealth tax that is the lottery.

I'm not even overly against the lottery but it does target those that can't afford it disproportionately. And if it pays for a feel good medal or two, it's a pernicious eating away at the resistance to buy a ticket or scratch card.

Having said that, without knowing anything about the millionaire benefactor, fair play to him and if his motives are purely altruistic then we should all take a lead from him about giving back to society what we have benefitted from ourselves.
