….there’s a ‘blue plaque’ on a house not far from me in Zig Zag Rd where Bessie Braddock lived. Wonderful woman.

The short-lived New Brighton Tower was styled on the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris and opened in 1898. The Tower was the highest building in the country at 568 feet and 621 feet above sea level, burnt down in a ballroom fire -

The Tower didn’t burn down, it was demolished after the First World War because vital maintenance, such as round the clock painting to protect against the constant, damp sea air, had not been carried out while workers were away in the trenches. The building at the foot of the tower finally burned down in 1969.
So why, oh why, did they pull it down...? Yes, of course, I know it was burned to the ground - but why not rebuild it...?
