Still in my memory, an earthy sweet and not unpleasant smell.

Mid 1960's, were the trains diesel then?

Blacklers at Christmas always had the illuminated star on its roof which could be seen at the Blackpool illuminations before they finished for the season. Liverpool, in those days was properly lit up at Christmas time -

Not sure, but I think it was electric back then...and maybe still is due to ventilation factors - Look for the 3rd rail to check?
