I play field hockey, long story so don't ask. A few years ago they abolished the offside rule completely (was the same as the football rule) everyone thought it would ruin the game, but it has made it more open and fluid. The reality is that with football the defense is always generally pushing up to keep pressure on forwards to stay onside, lose the rule and all of a sudden there is more space and defenders have to work for their money. The game benefits for the change.

*waits for all the dumb ass comments about field hockey

What about the goalhangers lad.

A better change would be you can only be offside inside the area (or from the edge of the area back, rather).

To be fair when we beat them when Beattie got the winner Henry was denied two by bad officiating.

Officials need help, tv provides so many angles and slo mo replays - it wouldn't be difficult. All I see is the Fa not wanting to pay 4 extra officials for every PREM game.

On the back of those incompetent and anti-football linesman decisions tonight...

You remember when there had to be "daylight" between the last defender and the attacker before the linesman would give it offside?

This is good for 2 reasons:

1) it gives the benefit to the attacker...which is great for the attacking spirit of the game

2) it's a lot easier to spot for the linesman. Far easier than his current job making judgement of mere inches between fast-moving athletes.

So...poll. Bring back daylight or keep the offside rule as is?

Not getting this. That is the rule as it is at the moment. The way I remember it was that the attacker had to actually be behind the defender; previously being level was offside. Then being level was onside. Now it's that daylight has to be there (i.e. the attacker is past the defender) before offside can be given. So your poll seems a bit arseways about.

Even using the oldest interpretation of the offside rule, Drenthe was 2 yards onside tonight for that goal which was disallowed.

Goal hangers either have to be marked man to man or cut off by Zonal defence, either way the game is more open, just watch a game if you get the chance. Just view it as football with sticks and a hard ball that essentially has general playing formations and tactics similar to football, we play a 1-3-3-3 formation that uses two wings and a centre forward works a treat.

Camera's will never be used for offside's. The drenthe goal was just really poor officiating. The lino was totally in line with play and drenthe had not 1 but 2 defenders playing him on, one further back than the other. Just a shocking decision.

Until refs/lino's start getting proper punishment for such bad decisions they will keep doing them and just shrugg there shoulders when they get it wrong!

Wont make any difference, certain referees and their assistants will still give the benefit to the top four and only the top four.
