A lot of it was down to his lifestyle as we'll mate was one of the drinking team back then
They were ALL part of the drinking team then
win draw or lose, we go on the booze - Terry McDermott.

you can run off food
you can run off ciggies
you can run off booze

you can't 'run off' personal problems - those inside your head - like women trouble or gambling.

and you can do sod all if your knees go.

just for my own edification I might try and dig out a copy of his auto/ghost written/whatever/ biography to see if he can shed any light on the 'true story'

Not Whiteside in particular, but the Final. Listened to it on a crackly old radio on the beach near Torreleminos in Spain, with about a dozen Man U supporters. We were selling timeshare and had the day off. I thought we would win when Moran got sent off, but it was not to be. Whiteside was 'past it' and had too many injuries when he joined us(no change there, then!) . We got Whiteside, Gibson and Hughes, all past it, and the RS wouldn't deal with Man U for years, and still don't.

Not to mention Saha.
