The Forest 4-0 game is my only memory of him. It was live on ITV and I videoed the game and watched it about 10 times. Can still remember Forest had Currie and Rice playing for them, they messed up at one point and the commentator said they'd "made a meal of it" which 10 year old me thought was hilarious.

'Currie and Rice getting into a bit of a mix up. You could say they made a meal of it'

Remember it well haha!

Was lucky (unlucky!) enough to be at Wembley in 1985! That goal he scored was a heartbreaker, and I have never ever seen it since - whenever it's been shown on telly since I've just shut my eyes until its gone!

It's a measure of how talented a player he was that he was still decent for us without ever leaving the centre circle, and playing with two arses in his shorts. Basically Gibson before there was a Gibson, without the running over of pedestrians in his car.

He broke my heart in May 1985. I was 8 years old, and my arl man and older brother went to Wembley. What a climax to an unforgettable season that would have been. I never went to the Cup final, I've heard accounts off many older blues that it was a hairy atmosphere beforehand and after.

What a strike to lose to though. The kind of goal that even Southall had no chance to stop.

I've been checking out footage of him on YouTube - wow, he was incredible. Skillful, speedy, a glorious ability to shrug off defenders and charge into dangerous positions. Certainly during his Man Utd days and Northern Ireland appearances.

His time with Everton was sadly quiet and seems to be forgotten these days.

Anyone have any memories of his time at Everton? I was regularly at the match when he joined us. Sadly I can't recall his time with us.
Went to the game straight from Rotterdam, thought we played really well , up until Moran was sent off then the game changed. If only Reidys shot which Gidman later revealed scraped his studs had gone in . Gidman said he normally wore molds but that day wore aluminium which were longer . And that's the difference.

Just think what he could have done if he had been sober.

In his first full season with us I recall he was joint top scorer with Tony Cottee - 14 goals in 28 games. The ball used to just bounce off him into the net if he was in the 6-yard box, although he could score a few pearlers as well. Remember a game at the Dell when Sharp nodded it down and without breaking stride he leathered it into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. The Southampton keeper never moved.

Was also prone to pop into the kitchens of the lounges when he wasn't playing to load up on dessert. Hadn't seen him since then - tried to catch up with him when he was on the lash in Liverpool a few years ago and I was back in the country - didn't work - never use twitter to try to plan a pub crawl.

I was at Parkhead pre season 1990 and he went in for a 50/50 with Peter Grant who thought he was tough. You could hear the thud from the terracing.

I remember the 1990 season very well.he scored 13 goals and fitness didn't seem to be an issue for him at all. Nevin mcall Whiteside and Sheedy was an attacking and balanced midfield and things looked rosey. Things very quickly went wrong the next season though. He was a gamble that didn't quite come off

He was my brothers good mate in BB, primary and secondary school. Bro always talked about the size of him and his skill compared to others. Smashing footballer and head and shoulders better than Gibson. He was a far better player than Gerrard and Lampard etc. Broke my heart when he scored that goal too.

A great player for United, we got him on the cheap, couldn't really run, basically his football brain was still very sharp
unfortunately his body couldn't do what his brain wanted him to do. He was still worth the money we paid for him because he was better than a lot of the players we had but in the end his body let him down, although it must be said his drinking
didn't do a lot to help him.

There was a reason SAF palmed him off to us in his early 20's - he was broken...He had the vision and guts plus no little skill - you could see it, but his body kept letting him down
A lot of it was down to his lifestyle as we'll mate was one of the drinking team back then

Not Whiteside in particular, but the Final. Listened to it on a crackly old radio on the beach near Torreleminos in Spain, with about a dozen Man U supporters. We were selling timeshare and had the day off. I thought we would win when Moran got sent off, but it was not to be. Whiteside was 'past it' and had too many injuries when he joined us(no change there, then!) . We got Whiteside, Gibson and Hughes, all past it, and the RS wouldn't deal with Man U for years, and still don't.

Like others have mentioned 2nd behind Cottee for top scorer in his 1st season. The goal at Southampton was quality. I dont remember him missing many games that year. Sadly it all went pear after that.
