Some great defence but this has not been a good year for QB play

10 years ago there were 3-4 defenders on the field that couldn't rush the passer and/or couldn't drop back in pass coverage. Even mediocre QBs were throwing for 350+/game. Plus a base D is a shell defense preventing a big pass play.

so it helps to have a running game these days.

NE is actually one of the few defenses built to stop the run 1st, and its really helped them these playoffs because they've faced running teams.
