Next Gen consoles - PS4/Xbox One

In fact, Sony confirmed at E3 that the PS4 WILL NOT be backward compatible.

Thought it still relies on Blu-ray and DVD for physical media, the PS4 won't be backwards compatible with PS3 titles, nor will your PSN purchases carry over (more on that later). And you can forget about keeping that DualShock 3 -- only Move, Sony's wand-like motion peripheral, has made the next-gen cut.

Not quite that simple unfortunately. At launch there will be no backwards compatibility. However next year they will be launching a service that allows it. There's not a lot of details, so so far we don't think think it'll be as easy as popping a disc in and playing as it doesn't have the chipset to run those games.

It is a cloud based service so you would be streaming the game from a server. The hope is that you won't have to repurchase games you own and that just popping your copy in will give you access to that game, but who knows

I would imagine that the PS4 won't be backward compatible due to the change in architecture (CEL to x86). Much like the Xbox One isn't supposed to be.

However, with emulation, it is very possible, but as anyone who has ran emulated games knows, there are sometimes 'glitches' that have to be overcome. And the best part is the glitches will be different for different titles.

In short, it is definitely possible, but I would imagine it won't happen unless it can be done properly (ie, not at launch, but added in later in an OS update)

Ah ok, cheers for the info chaps.

It's not a deal breaker for me. More just an idea of what to trade in when i get a PS4. I'd have kept some PS3 games (Red Dead etc...), but if they won't work i'll just trade in the whole lot.

Yeah sorry if I jumped the gun there a bit. No hardware backwards compat. but a streaming service will make PS3 games available for PS4 download from 2014. As Dunc says, not too many details at the mo.

At the minute the Sony have persuaded me towards the new PS4. I had the PS3 but got rid of it for the 360. I prefer the 360 due to the fact most of my friends are on XBL. I was excited for the new xbox but I'm gonna play it safe and get the PS4 on launch date.

Will get the xbox further down the line.

was gonna get the ps4 on release day but after a chat with me mate in the boozer ive decided to wait till after crimbo as i cant see it getting used to much with gta v still being only 8 weeks old!

I am finding it very amusing all the frothing at the mouth over the Xbox One. And not just on here, but all over the net. It seems to me that people think they have a god given right to the Xbox One. Microsoft, as the PRIVATE company, selling a product are free to dictate how their products are to be used.

Fact is, no one truely 'owns' their games, you only have a license to use it. You own the physical medium it is present on (the game disc or your hard drive), but the software remains the sole property of the publisher. People have been clicking away rights in this regard for years and years now. Every time you just skip that massive wall of text with the "OMG JUST LET ME AT THE GAME' attitude, you are forfeiting your rights.

As short sighted as Microsoft seem, it is their right to implement this. I can't say with certainty, but I would be willing to put a few bob on Sony following suit, just with less fan-fare.

Buy the console that makes you happy. That is all you have to do!

Just buy a PC!

Yes....there is that too.

With the point being that even AMD's top end octacore chips get a pantsing by mid-range Intel quad-cores. PC's will forever be the superior platform. No longer will there be console exclusives.....some enterprising 'programmer' will drop console 'exclusives' right onto PC.

To be honest I haven't bought a console simply because I'm TERRIBLE with the controllers, just so used to keyboard and mouse gaming. Just set in my ways, but so far my gaming experience hasn't been too badly affected over the years by any company, except Steam and single player games that keep you online, but even that has worked out well with more opportunities for budding games developers to sell their wares.

What rights though? What rights should you have in regard to owning a copy of someone elses creation? I may have missed something but just wanted to know what was this in regards to.

My PS3 works fine, plays Blu Ray movies and all the games I want at the moment.

Why would I want to rush out and splurge my hard earned dollars on something I really have no need of? I am willing to bet that 99.9% of people posting in here are actually in the same position but are getting sucked up into the hype. Same with new release games in my opinion, overpriced for what you get, just wait a few months and buy it cheaper.

Consumerism has got a tight hold on your ball sack lads.

It's what separates us from Animals and Religious Fanatics mate and should be embraced.
