News of Ex Players

A decent listen, short and sweet. When was the last time a player scored on his debut, never mind a hat-trick ?!

….he was a terrific goalscorer, 56 in 97 games for us (5 goals in 3 England games) and so unlucky not to play in ‘66 Cup Final. Very underrated. I have an early memory of a Goodison Inter Cities Cup game (maybe against a Scottish team) where he went off injured and came back on with a huge bandage on his head.

He hit a heavy ball, hence the nickname ‘Boomer’.

Anyone know why we sold him?

….i wouldn’t know for definite but Catterick was very stubborn and clearly thought the time was right. A cartridge operation was significant back then and you can clearly see the disappointment on Pickering face as he sat on that bench at Wembley in ‘66, so there might have been words between them.

To be fair, he was only 26 when he left and only played circa 100 games more in his career.
