Fond memories of my football idol Dave Hickson who passed away eight years ago today July 8th

I was.priviliged to do the eulogy at his funeral at Liverpool Cathedral

Met him in the 70s when he was playing cricket for Port Sunlight, smashing guy, had time for everyone and just loved his sport.

What a lovely fella he was, my old fella loved him and always reckoned Davie carried us out of the second division on his back

Davie was the only idol I ever had, he wasn’t the best of players and he knew it but he loved Everton as much as any of us and that was enough for me. When I was a kid I saw him on the No.3 bus going to Goodison and I used to have a chat to him and he was always easy to talk to, I was sick when he went to Aston Villa but made up when he came back from Huddersfield Town, Inremember his first goal at Goodison Park when he came back, versus Chelsea and after the initial burst of cheering after he scored, the clapping continued for quite a few minutes afterwards, rough and ready on the field a gentleman off it, loved him.
