New Contracts: Barry, Baines and Holgate

Don't think Barry will continue to start and you will see him being phased out. Thought what koeman said made a lot of sense that there is place in the squad for the older players as role models for the younger players. Frankly more of our players need Barry's type of attitude. No one else in our team would have gone toe to toe with Costa last year other than him and not taken a backward step. I also imagine that he sets a high bar in training. There is definitely a role for Barry coming off the bench to help protect leads and to start games like against city away.
Would be nice to get Barkley new contract sorted and we need Lukaku to sign another deal soon or sell to protect their transfer values.
I thought Koemans comments regarding Holgate were telling as well as he mentioned that Holgate is one of a group of very good younger players we have. Maybe he isn't as anti-youth as the majority seem think and he just doesn't feel that the likes of Davies are ready just yet based on what he sees everyday in training?

Makes good sense to extend Barry, very rarely misses a game through injury and must be a great influence on younger players. I wouldn't imagine he is in a tremendous amount now anyway.

Baines does seem like a long term contract but if he can stay injury free great.

Holgate is a no brainer.

Good business all round. Steve Walsh earning his dough!

????

Was talking about Baines and whether he was getting an increase on his wage. Do keep up

I know and im saying that barry isn't on cheap wages either and at 35/36 signing an extension could be a bad move, especially when Koeman wants to play this pressing game, which requires legs such as McCarthy and Gueye. Not knocking Barry BTW been a great player for us.

If Barry could impart even a fraction of his ability to read a game onto some of the younger players it'll be worth a contract extension.

As many have said I would imagine he won't be first choice and will start to be phased out, hes a good option to have in some games and also great for the younger lads in the team to learn from

I personally feel that its important to have good pros around the club and they don't get much better than Barry.

The young lads will learn a lot from him, especially how to conduct yourself away from the field if you want a long career and that can be vital, worth it even if he becomes a bit part player now which he should.

Of course, I think his footballing brain is lightyears ahead of some other squad members, see barry's brain in delboys body = class.
I think we would of been better waiting until the end of the season to be honest. Although im aware that money is not always the issue here, a lot of players at 35 just want a two year deal for security rather than aggro over an extra £10k a week rise. I just think that maybe this means davies might not get a look in, especially if Schneiderman joins in the window.

Davies will be fine once Snivs and Gibson are kicked out of the club.

It's the opposite of that though surely. Steve Walsh's job is to improve the first team, and by giving contract extension to players who are on the decline is the opposite of that. I've no problem with Baines (if it was 1 year) to be honest as at a time when we expect great change he represents something different to Everton.

But Barry shouldn't be starting games now, and his involvement in the squad now and next season is a place that would be better taken up by one of the younger players. Whatever wage he is on 50k or even 10k, it could be better spent on someone else. I highly doubt a first year coach earns that kind of wage so for people saying he may move there etc. let him retire first and then give him that option. Just cos he's an experienced player doesn't automatically make him a good coach.

Lack of ambition for me with that one.

Great that we tied down Holgate as he's looked excellent when he's come in this season.
1.5yrs for 35yo Barry?
2.5yrs for 32yo Baines?
Hmmm not so sure. 1.5yrs for Baines and waiting to see how the season progressed for Barry would have been more sensible but I do acknowledge Baines showed loyalty when he didn't push to go to Utd.
