Baines should get it and he should consider it an honour. Rumour is though is that he's not interested in having the armband, hence why it's been given to Barry when Jagielka isn't playing. Very disappointing if true.

he thinks he is not good enough and when you look back on his career at wigan he never gave himself an easy time with his confidence

I agree, Baines isn't captain material, I'm not convinced about McCarthy either.

Basically there's no obvious replacement for Jagielka as captain. The ones who have the required leadership qualities aren't guaranteed a start and the ones guaranteed a start, aren't captain material.

Longer term, I'd chuck the armband at Besic or Stones, but, for now, while Jags isn't ideal, I'm struggling to see a good reason to remove the captaincy from him.

By the way - seen a lot of people going on about his body language in his interview proving that he has no confidence - no he just always interviews like that:

We've got a squad full of very experienced players why would any of them need someone with a elastic band on their arms to tell them what to do?

All modern day club captains do is toss a coin and organise the clubs Christmas party and sweepstakes.

McCarthy for me. Has had a bit more of a gob on him this season, sets a good example, can boss from the midfield, should be starting every game when fit anyway.

Definitely definitely DEFINITELY not to be changed til the season's over though.

I am honestly stumped on who should take the armband, besic sounds like a bad idea and stones is too young, wish baines was more up for it

For me, the end of the season is the time to sort this out.
Stripping Jagielka of the captaincy mid-season would send out all the wrong signals.

Yes it is definitely not the time now but it does need addressing, I can't believe how bad he was tonight and how scared and absolutely lost he looked

Over the years, I've worked with some very experienced and talented people. Some of them are self-motivated and need no leadership, others need someone to push them in the right direction. Football players are no different really, some of them need someone to look to for a bit of guidance both on, and off the pitch.

That's the captain's role, I don't underestimate it. Look at clubs which win things and look at their captains, they tend to be really good leaders ( obviously there are exceptions to that ) and that's no coincidence.

Yes that's all very true but you're also, ignoring that in this squad of players there's a couple of muilt medal winners (Eto'o and Barry) an another international captain (Howard) and at least two other players who are just as experienced as Jags.

SureLy that's enough leaders with experience and quality in our squad of 24? a modern captains role is more media orientated than anything else now squads are so big and diverse.

That's simply untrue. Terry and Kompany, are the two most successful captains and are real leaders.

Partly why they're both worth absolutely loads and way out of our reach. There aren't many natural leaders in football these days.

Naismith was rubbish tonight by the way dave.
