Southgate is the international version of OGS, took over from a team in crisis and had a run of favourable fixtures to earn a new contract. England should be a side that gets to the semi final of a tournament with minimum fuss, unless they get a heavyweight opponent in an earlier round. Which is pretty much what happened every (recent) tournament apart from when Hodgson was in charge. England need someone who will win these games when it starts getting a bit harder, an aging Croatia and a Netherlands team still finding their feet should be winnable games. Never mind the golden generation, this will be classed as the wasted one.

It's a bit of a joke having the likes of Delph in the side. He's hardly played this season. And Stones strolling around the pitch for City doesn't really prepare him to face a determined international team.
But I suppose Southgate is trying to make the best of what's available.

My thoughts exactly, sub par performances as well, didn't he only beat Tunisia convincingly? And now he got an MBE.

OGS had his honeymoon period and they're stuck with him until probably Christmas before they realise they'll need a big name manager.

No complaints about the result, it was always likely to be difficult with so many unable to start the game.

Harry Kane, Dele Ali, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Danny Rose, Harry Winks, Eric Dier and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all either injured recently and not picked for the squad or deemed unable to start due to the proximity of such an important Champions League final.

While not all would have started, to have ten English qualified players unable to start and still do well was a mighty tall order. This given the relative paucity of English qualified players of sufficient quality available to Southgate anyway.

The success of prem sides in Europe generally, and specifically the champions league, meant they took a huge hit.

There's a reason Stones doesn't command a place at City anymore, he still hasn't learnt since making similar errors when at Everton.

Guardiola can do so much but he can't make a defender out of Stones

Sancho missed a sitter too but the denial of Lingard's 'goal' seemed to point to it not being England's night.

Without so many starters it was always likely to be a scratch side, and a scratch side invariably finds it hard to find any cohesion

Southgates England is still the best England team in years, granted that’s not saying much but they’ve put in some good performances under him... better than I’ve seen under other managers. We just lack big game mentality.

Still think the future is quite positive for English football, maybe not immediate future but over the next decade.

Oh look the new England that don’t pander to the big teams picked a team that pandered to the big teams and with their new “we fear no one” attitude they got beaten by one of the good teams.

What’s changed?

Last minute goal to beat Tunisia. Think it was the dog and duck or Panama that we beat convincingly.

Though in southgate's defence he cant really be blamed for tonight. Just three rank bad errors and without VAR england would be through to the final.

3 players tonight are bench warmers for their own clubs, surely that’s not good enough for an international side.
