It's not that strange a decision. It's a switch to a back 4 and Lampard clearly doesn't trust the defensive side of his game enough to be a RB rather than RWB. It's worrying, yes, but there's time for him to learn that side of the game.

It took Baines a while to establish himself at LB for us, same for Coleman at RB. On the other side of the park, it took Robertson a while to establish himself at LB for them. All older than Patterson.

We clearly needed to go to a back 4 and Lampard decided to stick with Kenny.

To be fair, the formation meant their space was being taken by the centre halves on either side. Kenny in particular was playing in Patterson's space the full half.
