My prediction for England's future

What is love?
It's a very promising time for fans of the England national team, with some seriously good young forwards who have already emerged or are still emerging. We are stacked in that department. However, here's the stone cold hard kick in the nuts.

Goalkeeper - nothing more than average.
Defence - nothing more than average.
Midfield - With the exception of Foden, it is nothing more than average.

Oh and as for the manager, yes I do genuinely like the bloke, but Southgate is nothing more than average.

I'm confident that I'll be proven right and that England will still have not won anything, sadly. Feel free to vault this.

Too early to say IMO. Like you say in attack we look well-stocked for years. Attacking midfield too IMO (Foden, Mount, Grealish, Maddison among others). Other positions it's just too early to say if players will develop into top class players or not.

Goalkeeper- I concur. At international level to win a knockout tournament you need better. Pickford can pull off the sensational but there's too many concentration errors in him. 6 or 7 games over 4 or 5 weeks and England would require to be sensationally lucky to get by with him. No idea who is realistically coming through and better.

Defence - I think that here England are solid enough. A fair number of solid if not stellar defenders available. A decent set up and stability and that should be sufficient though.

Midfield- yep, not really that quality there in depth. Would need to be working at 100% and rely on the forwards to get away with the current midfield.

Attack - decent. Perfectly capable. Stirling and Kane are arguably elite class. Have a puncher's chance with them fit.

Overall it's ok if unspectacular. A semi finalist type level if all goes well and no more than that.

Southgate seems well suited to international management.

I'm not expecting much in the next 2 or 3 tournaments other than solid efforts and our idiot fans winning the bi-annual plastic chair flinging competition.

I think it'll be 2024 when we *might* start having a chance of winning things. I wouldn't even consider us a semi final team at the moment. We got lucky with the draw in 2018

Greece won a Euros. If they start doping like the current league champions, and got a percentages, high tempo coach, England would win something.

Feels like England have about 40 of the exact same central midfielder coming through.

Some genuinely world class talent in other positions though, wide players and full backs in particular.

England have always done well at under age, but half of the squad which won a world Cup have been here, and none are world beaters. Calvert-lewin has vastly improved this year and Kenny has done well on loan, so last season that would have looked even bleaker.
